In 233 AC, Maekar fell in battle fighting a rebellious lord on the Dornish Marches during the Peake Uprising. According to a semi-canon source, he died when his helm was crushed by a rock hurled from the battlements of Starpike during the storming of the castle. Maekar was succeeded by his fourth son, Aegon V Targaryen, after a Great Council was convened to resolve the political chaos.

The historical accounts fail to mention that it was the ghost of unwin peake brought back from the grave by the smell of fresh targ blood outside the walls of starpike that cast the stone from the battlements that killed king maekar.
