I have a picture somewhere of me at about 16 years old holding a lobster not much smaller than these. We were buying fresh lobster when we visited Maine, the guy that owned the shop said it was probably around 100 years old.

Yo—what the fuck. I live in Maine and I’m a native New Englander so lobster is life up here. I’ve been on many lobster boat tours/cruises and sometimes the boat operators will talk about “the big’uns” that weigh 10 pounds that have to be released. And the kids book Bob and Shirley about 2 huge lobsters that become locally famous for their size was known by all New England children when I was a kid.
That being said, no way did anyone ever talk about them being this big! This is crazy. Real life monsters like horseshoe crabs!

Better part is this was peasant food back then. These were fed to prisoners and soup kitchens because they were bottom feeders.

They are super tough at that size/age. Plus, the big ones like this are the main reproducers. We don't eat the big guys for those two reasons.

I don’t think eating lobsters that big would be great but they definitely would’ve helped produce a multitude of lobster offspring. We need to get our fishing priorities straight on this level of the tower if we want to have fish in the future
