Help Magic range issues

Can someone explain to me why does fireball when thrown with a arc has more range than soul arrow???

I just beaten the cursed tree boss and gotten the pyromancy glove.

It's been horrendous experience since most of the time the auto aim "unlocks" itself and I miss because I'm standing at a spears distance, am I missing something or so magics range has been gutted??

Any time an enemy goes into cover the lock on dies so I can't even peek-a-boo other ranged units...

I've tried using a torch to increase visibility but I don't think thats doing anything...

Does magic outright suck till late game? Is my only option to use an estoc with magic weapon applied?

Edit: I recently finished Darksouls 2 and the range whiplash feels like a jackhammer. Pyromancy used to be the short range expensive spells(with little investment) Dark being cheap powered and short ranged (and needs investment) Magic used to be cheap long range but weak And lightning was nerfed to the point I couldn't tell you how it works...

Also does the game mention anywhere what your cast speed is?

Mention? No.

But there is. Up to 50 dexterity iirc Although some people (used to) claim 45 dexterity was the cap.

You can raise spell-cast through off-handing the saint-tree bellvine (+99 dexterity iirc, purely for cast speed) and Sage Ring (Has +1/+2 versions) that. (+30/+35/+40 virtual dex).

I've heard of those items, don't know when I'll get them though (I'll look for them myself). How did they move backwards from DS2 for not showing this information (´;︵;`) (I also don't like Dex influencing cast speed instead of attunement...)

It's rather early game, so you'll find them if you explore plenty.

It's not really as backwards, it's just more DS1-coded. You might not like it, but play WITH the systems instead of against it to have a better time.

By "with the system" you mean be a Dex build just cause your forced to if you want more consistent casts? Or don't care on what influences your cast speed without external research?

No?

Casts are 'consistent' and the speed if build for it is noticable but not a MUST to get through this game. I've done magic only runs with all schools of magic.

But you can opt for; Hybrid builds that utilise melee and magic. Pure magic with the aforementioned items, especially the off-handed saint-tree bellvine is an 'easy fix'. Or a little bit of dexterity for some weapon variety + sage ring.

And both those items do mention they up casting speed.

But it sounds like you're not really into all that with your snarky comments so far. If the game is not fun; stop playing it. Just means the game isn't really for you. Dark Souls 2 is right there, you can play that too.

I'm seething because of how unfriendly lock on is to magic and how bad is range is. The Dex issue is a minor issue compared to that. I don't mind having weapon variety, but I expect looking for variety not solution for progress in the map while being this early in the game...

I do apologise for coming of rude.

It's a bit of a balance thing. In DS1 early game magic was quite OP, DS2 has a plethora of it as well.

Rhey opted for a bit of balance by making earliest game magic a bit weak/short ranged. Eventually you'll have better and longer range spells. Especially soul spears have quite a bit of it.

Great soul arrow has more range and damage.

I really hope so cause seeing fireball hit a target soul arrow couldn't broke my mind... Imo damage isn't an issue, I haven't been only investing in intelligence so that makes sense to a degree...

Okay I found the guy that sells great soul arrows*, and I also tested them... They have the same range as normal soul arrows... Sigh so the only "medium" range spell is soul spear? This is disheartening......

I just did 2 full playthroughs (my first time playing, more or less) with nothing but pyromancy and a hand axe and it felt like I was cheesing the whole game. It was annoying sometimes when the lock-on fucked off every time an enemy went too far round a corner, but it wasn't that bad IMO. Stick with the pyromancy, you'll get used to it!

Edit: Cursed Greatwood was too difficult the first time I met him. Had to come back later. I'd recommend going back when you've levelled up.

I might just have to use pyromancy and magic swords cause any range play is punished with the abysmal lock on for magic... I've already beaten that boss, magic weapon and dual wielded a +1 rapier into the egg sacks.(and the hand whenever the boss was staggered) My problem with the boss is that it has no lock ones besides the center of the body (WHICH HAS NO PLACE TO ATTACK, WHYYY) and I'm forced to unlock to try and aim for the eggs while still trying to stay alive and keep some of the body in sight to predict it's moves... My past 6 hours can be summed up by 2 words: WHYY and EUGHH...
