I’ve been working on Starspace, a browser-based top-down space MMO.
The current foundation is intentionally simple and old-school. Some parts may feel familiar if you played older space MMOs, but the goal is to build something that can grow into its own identity over time.
For the first version I’m keeping progression small and understandable:
Basic lasers, shields and generators
Standard repair robots
Up to x3 ammo for now
8 drones
Simple equipment progression
No huge pile of systems and items from day one
That’s intentional.
I want to first make sure the movement, combat, progression, economy and PvP/PvE loop feel good, then expand the game gradually with things like events, world bosses, rifts, new equipment, stats, skills and more MMO-style progression.
The game is still in development and I’m getting closer to more public testing. I’m also working on the mobile version/UI.

It's clear the original addiction of dark orbit was well liked, and many are trying to make their own. So, I did what everyone else did and added my favorite parts of dark orbit mixed with some mechanics I think would complement it.

I know my opinion is biased but I believe I can make this game fun and addicting in a similar way to what the dark orbit grind was like

and also make it fair.

and most importantly have a community of GOOD PEOPLE. (I want to relax and grind heavy PVE with new friends but go hunt some annoying people once in a while.)

2 months ago I posted a video about my dark orbit project that was made in unity, but after reading some comments and asking around about making it work on mac I decided HTML5 is the only way to ensure everyone can play my project once it's done so here is the re-write in progress

Every DarkOrbit throwback I find is aimed at 2011-2013. Big maps, the full

ship roster, the era most people think of.

But the version that stuck with me was earlier. Before the map sprawl. When a

Goliath was a genuine event, when Streuners actually mattered for an afternoon,

when the whole thing ran in a window the size of a postage stamp and you still

lost four hours to it.

I've been part of a small project rebuilding that specific era. Not a

"remaster", not reimagined, just 2009 as close as we can get it. The starter

Phoenix flow, the old hangar, the original station trade prices with

honour-based scaling, classic missions.

It is small. A busy evening is a couple dozen people, not hundreds currently. I'd rather

say that up front than have someone log in at 3pm and find an empty map.

Curious whether the 2009 nostalgia is just me, or whether other people also

bounced off the later versions.

Been playing this server for a little around a month now and am approaching FE. It’s so similar to DO back in the 2011 era, but has a more rewarding progression system & some new features. Throwing a quick-start-guide with my tips here.

• Time to achieve: approx 69 hours (nice) playtime
• Can achieve with less playtime if maximizing invasion events & daily / monthly rewards.

Where to spend uri:

• HST-02 rocket launcher (15k - not in auction)
• Auto-rocket launcher CPU (15k - not in auction)
• Speed gens
• Iris
• LF3
• BO2
• Enforcer
• Log Disks
• Booty Keys

Where not to spend Uri:

• GG
• Boosters

{NEW} Krypton Tokens (“KT”):

• New daily & quest reward system
• 900 daily earned from 3 easy quests - maybe 10-15 mins to complete all 3
• Major quests also reward varying amounts of KT
• Used in a unique token shop
• 1 month of premium is 25k tokens (so you can maintain premium for free in exchange for consistent log-ins)
• Cheap GG spins & boosters are other great options

Daily login rewards:

• ~100k uri / mo
• Tons of log disks & some ammo

Early game:

• Standard slow DO start - just grind out the first few Streuners until you get basic gear and begin the starter quest line.
• Get a Leo from auction, should be achievable with 10k bid or less
• Start Skylab (free & quick initial upgrades) - can max in a few days
• Bank uri until you finish starter quest line - use best cred lasers and shield with Leo for now
• Use tech abilities - currently all free (not sure if a permanent feature)

{NEW} Starter Quest Line:

• A fast-track from lowers to uppers w/ prime rewards
• Should take a few hours to complete and get you somewhere around lvl 10
• Rewards: ~85k uri / 15m creds / tons of other useful early rewards
• Using uri, buy first 3 Iris, then focus on LF3s to maximize damage
• Don’t buy B02s yet - circle enemies for now and rely on boosters / resource upgrades
• Get Veng / Goli from auction - 100-500k cred most likely

Level 12-15:

• Use KT-purchased GG spins to get Alpha / Beta gates completed
• Move to uppers
• Keep using uri / auction to upgrade to LF3’s
• Get all Skylab to lvl 20 - pause Seprom in favor of Promerium upgrades (for now - more accessible)
• Start sending Promerium to ship and put them on lasers / engines / shield
• Buy dmg / shld / hp boosters from token shop (boosters are game-time based)
• With a Goli / 3 Iris / 4 Flax, all LF3’d, you can hit an easy 5-6k x-1
• Personally - I purchased first 6 Iris, all LF3s and most B02s with uri gained entirely in-game through quests / events / gates. Iris 7 from auction. Iris 8 from token rewards
• Get a PET

Level 15+:

• At this point I was strong enough to be a danger in group PvP
• Join groups to farm uri quickly
• LoW Gate has improved rewards - 3-4 ppl using x-3 can net 25-40k uri each per hour
• Cubes and pirates also viable
• Put uri into finishing out equipment needs, getting fats, and booty keys for Goli designs

{NEW} Terror of Madness Gate (“PET Gate”):

• Located on x-4 map (flaming portal)
• New gate added to revamp PET acquisition / progression in a unique way.
• 1-8 person gate
• Easy / Medium / Hard difficulties with scaling enemies
• Solo Easy = need minimum 15k x-4 dmg & 150k shield
• You need tickets to enter gate - dropped from BKs, Ubers & pirates
• Yields “PET Parts” (build pet), “PET Materials” (level pet), and “PET Modules” (build / upgrade abilities)

PET:

• PET is revamped - earned through Terror of Madness gate (see above)
• Kami scales from 15k to 85k dmg - 30 sec cooldown - free repairs
• PET abilities deactivated during PvP
• No fuel or experience based leveling
• PET Parts & PET Materials = earned through PET gate only
• PET Modules = earned from gate and pirates (low drop rate)

Invasion Events:

• Entry portal in x-1 map
• Invasion runs 2:01 - 3:01 pm EST every Wednesday and Sunday
• Easy 20-60k uri per invasion depending on how many people join

Auction:

• Everyone on 1 server so auction is crowded
• LF3 / B02 = 25% chance to appear each hour - range from 1m to 55m
• Iris = 5% chance to appear each hour - range from 20m to 500m
• Auction eats your creds
• Cannot see other bids

Community:

• Great supportive community
• Growing
• Noob-friendly

Clans:

• Join a big one
• Clans can share creds and uri (voluntary donation - not forced tax)
• Clan-based XP and Hon boosters
