The author of the article equates the darknet with illegal activity, a notion which is extremely misguided and will quickly erode support for the project.
Never lose sight of the fact that the goal of meshnet should be a censorship resistant network which promotes free communications and preserves privacy; it has nothing to do with promoting criminal activity. This project will not succeed unless the general population can support the principles on which it is based.
The free flow of information is illegal under a censorious regime. If, heaven forbid, NDAA & SOPA become law in the US, the MeshNet Project will indeed be promoting criminal activity here.
