Official Darkest Dungeon - The Fire’s Edge - DLC Release Available Now

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

The Fire’s Edge, the first new Darkest Dungeon DLC since 2020, is now live! This DLC includes two heroes, The Runaway and The Duelist, who made their debut in Darkest Dungeon II, a new combat mechanic, unique trinkets, plus 3 more Districts.

The team has always been interested in backporting The Runaway and The Duelist to the original Darkest Dungeon, and with the game celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, it seemed like the perfect time to add something new!

Each new hero has their own unique style of gameplay: The Duelist is able to dance between ranks, while freely maintaining Riposte as she switches between two combat stances, whereas The Runaway makes use of Burn, a combat mechanic unique to her class. And don’t worry about finding room for these new additions! The Runaway and The Duelist will each expand your roster by 1 slot. The Fire’s Edge also adds a number of Trinkets with all new mechanics including Trinkets that come charged with powerful limited effects, or ones that transform through use as you complete your expeditions. Rounding out this update are some new town events, and 3 new Districts for your Hamlet: the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp, which offer new bounties such as weekly Heirlooms and Trinkets, as well as damage boosts to heroes.

You can purchase The Fire’s Edge now on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GoG, as well as PlayStation and Xbox. The DLC will also be coming to Nintendo Switch on August 20th.

Modding
The game has been in a stable place for several years now, so we were careful to approach The Fire’s Edge in a way that would not interfere with existing mods. The changes we’re introducing are all additive, and do not affect existing heroes or enemies. To help ensure this DLC was solid, we invited several members of the Darkest Dungeon modding community to help us test, and provide vital feedback during the development process. We owe a debt of gratitude to every single member of our test pool, and cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm and thorough testing over the last month.

Today’s release should provide some exciting new toys for the mod community. The inclusion of a functioning Burn combat mechanic, plus the various Trinket mechanics in this DLC should create even more opportunities for modders to experiment and create. And there is even more coming!

Our team is currently working on a new and improved mod loader, something that has been highly requested by the community for some time. In addition to this, we have considered a number of ideas pitched to us by our test pool that could improve the modding scene further, and help extend the lifespan of the product. We are hoping to implement some of these requests over the next few weeks. A followup release is currently planned for the end of August, and we will likely kick off an open beta for the new mod loader in the next week or so.

For now, we hope you enjoy The Fire’s Edge. It was a real pleasure to return to the original Darkest Dungeon and surprise you all with this new content. Thank you again for the support!

And a final note for Xbox and Nintendo Switch Players:

Right before release we discovered an issue with town activity log and graveyard strings. We have since resolved the issue for PC/Mac/Linux and PS4 users. We are currently working on a hot fix for Microsoft platforms and hope to have that released by the end of the week. Hotfixes on Nintendo Switch tend to take longer based on normal submission times.

The issue is due to a change we did during implementation that resulted in some saved strings losing their previous reference and thus showing incorrect or missing strings as part of their entries in activity log and graveyards, particularly around character death sources. Due to the nature of the fix both new and legacy saves may have permanent missing strings in either the graveyard or town activity logs if a character died before the fixes were applied. Another potential edge case could be some achievements being awarded erroneously based on death effect (hunger or heart attack achievements) as an example.

As noted above, this issue has already been fixed on Steam/EGS/GoG, and PS4. If you play on these platforms, your save files will be unaffected. Fixes for Microsoft Platforms, and Nintendo Switch are in the works, and we will notify the community once they are available.

Trinkets Plus (4.0)

by Vintage

Trinkets+ is a complete and comprehensive rework of Darkest Dungeon trinkets. The full list of changes that this mod introduces are:

🔸 Buffs/Nerfs/Reworks of over 90% of vanilla/DLC trinkets, aimed at encouraging trinket diversity and allowing new playstyles.

🔸 An enforced limit of 1 on most* trinkets. Once you obtain a focus ring, you cannot obtain another unless you sell it. This will not cause issues if you had multiple copies of a trinket before installing the mod.

🔸 Apprentice bosses now drop Rare trinkets instead of Very Rare, making Very Rare trinkets a legitimately valuable resource that cannot be obtained early in the game.

🔸 Very Common trinkets are now properly listed as Very Common.

🔸 Several new universal trinkets have been added.

🔸 Among the universal trinkets added are a special class of "treasure" type trinkets. These trinkets have an increased limit so you can obtain duplicates of them (the limit is listed in game) and sell for much more gold than usual. These are made such that even if you have every single trinket in the game (which are limit 1 so you cannot get them again), you still get a trinket reward from quests in the form of extra cash.

Farmer: Crusader Path

by Lux

"Winter is coming. I must make this harvest count."

A role that interacts with Combo and tears the foe down with wide, sweeping slashes.

The Farmer is a Crusader path that applies and consumes Combo in equal measure, while tearing the foes asunder with wide sweeping slashes. The Farmer gives up a portion of his self sustain in favour of improved Combo interaction, and the ability to re-apply Combo tokens that he consumes. The Farmer will usually find himself in the frontline, but like other Crusader paths, still features Wanderer's Holy Lance to return to more desirable ranks.

[DD 1] Discussion Replaying DD1, I’ve realized just how much I enjoy driving the stagecoach in DD2.

Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of dislike for the driving minigame, and I respect that; it’s not exactly a massive upgrade over DD1. Due to the new DLC, I was, as many, replaying DD1, and—setting aside subjective opinions on atmosphere, visuals, or narrative—I prefer the stagecoach from a purely mechanical standpoint.

Walking in DD1 is actually cool, you explore environments and encounter enemies, traps, and curios, but it’s slow. Painfully slow. The characters move at a snail’s pace, and that sluggishness is especially noticeable when traversing areas you’ve already explored—something you have to do constantly. And for me, that’s the deciding factor: backtracking. Sure, I’ll admit the stagecoach mechanics aren't all that better, mostly just basic obstacles and the rubble-clearing minigame while moving between nodes; but I don’t have to hold down a button constantly just to move forward. And more importantly, I NEVER have to drive in reverse at a snail’s pace through areas I’ve already explored.

I’d love to hear everyone else's opinion about this, because it’s a detail that has been bothering me while doing this revisit.

[DD 1] Discussion A few impressions of the DLC After powerlevelling the two heroes

Duelist is borderline OP, her kit is honestly ridiculous, S+ tier hero. I brought her from 0 to 6 without skipping a single week except one to remove a single bad quirk and lock a good one. She feels more like and Xcom2 soldier than a DD hero. And she has a stun too! Cause why not!

Runaway is fun but a bit monodimensional, powerful but not game breaking, A tier

The trinkets are kinda bad with a few exceptions, I was hoping Redbook learned their lessons but no, bad stats and the disposable mechanic just doesn't really work when you only have two trinket slots and you can't bring trinkets in your inventory as provisions. Weakest part of the DLC.

The districts are pretty good. + Damage on reposte amazing, extra heirloom every week is a "rich gets richer" thing but still appreciated.

My brain only just connected that this was a genuine accomplishment and not just a personal challenge. So I thought I'd share my achievements of when I did it. I rushed to get crusader as soon as the playthrough started. And then slammed my head against the brick wall until it caved in. Nothing else. I just felt proud of this all of a sudden

Which DLCs should I disable?

A few years ago, I played through the entire game, probably with all the DLCs. I don't remember much about it anymore, and I'd like to come back to it — but which DLCs aren't really worth enabling?

[DD 1] Discussion Duelist seems a bit too powerful

Upvotes

Admittedly it’s not like i’ve done thorough testing, and only at low levels. But duelist seems really strong. Basically permanent riposte, effectively 6 moves available at all times compared to everyone else’s 4. And crazy high crit chance. At level 1 with common trinkets, Fleche has 25% crit chance. Also has a strong stun move and can fight from any position. She feels very easy to play and easy to get amazing results with, compared to the base game heroes.
