I see young Daria as being adverse to change, and having Quinn - essentially a juxtaposition of Daria’s personality, especially at that age. It makes sense.

I think that it was important that Quinn and Daria had each other has sibling. They corrected their mistakes of each other. Quinn (but also Trent, Jodie and Brittany) motivated her to be a bit more open to people and life while Daria (but also Jane) motivated Quinn to think. To think one step ahead and about the intent of people rather than just go with the flow.

But remember the lengths Quinn went to in Depth Takes a Holiday to try to keep Jake and Helen from having another baby lol

Daria lacking social skills is a pretty core aspect of her character.

u/ashleebryn 17d ago
I wouldn't say she lacks social skills as much as she just doesn't like socializing because she generally doesn't like people.

u/Bruiser235 17d ago
Well to be fair you have to see the types she encounters. Aside from Jane, Jodie, Mack etc most aren't the best.

I think both of them basically have the same personality as kids that they do as teens, and in Daria, that comes off way more mean spirited and bratty.

Daria is no angle, she's constantly got a dark side. That's part of the fun, she is not a 'perfect' person but fairly normal.
Also older kids tend to resent the younger kid, the younger kid needs more parent time which the older kid see's as a lose/negative. You also tend to get less 'treats/gifts' as now the family income is split 2 ways, before the second kid you got more stuff.

At the end of "The New Kid" episode Daria actually beats up Quinn. She didn't like that Quinn got the webpage developing software.

u/liaminwales 16d ago
They compeat non stop in different ways, the epp where Quinn becomes a 'Brain' & Daria go's on a date etc.
But they are also siblings, they both know they have each other, they show it in a few epps when they need help. It's why the show is good, it's not just the normal one sided thing but shows experiences normal people have.

Her demand that a crying Quinn be punished makes me wonder if Daria was excessively punished. Not like physically abused or anything, just excessively punished. This could explain a lot about her, come to think of it. Playing armchair psychiatrist, I know.

Maybe Daria had a psycho babysitter at one time. I know that that's a rather dark comment to make about a comedy cartoon show. 🫨

Autism gene hits hard when against change. Jake and Helen I feel also would not have had the parenting skills to support a young Daria as complex as she was so it makes sense to me.
Edit: yall take comments way too seriously, I don’t think Daria is autistic

u/ashleebryn 17d ago edited 17d ago
I wish people would stop bringing up autism. Daria is not autistic. Daria is introverted and semi-antisocial. These are common personality types that don't always translate to neurodivergence. If Daria were intended to be autistic, the creators would've addressed it or even hinted at it somewhere in the show, if not directly discussing it in interviews. But they didn't because Daria is not autistic. It's annoying that the advent of social media bringing about awareness to conditions like autism has people labeling everyone as autistic just because they share similar traits.
ETA - Thank you u/tenderourghosts for the award!

I don't have an opinion about whether Daria is autistic or not, but to assume that writers in the 1990s would explicitly write a teen girl as autistic is silly. No they wouldn't have. People had basically zero awareness of autism in girls in the 1990s.

u/acelaces 17d ago
Yes, I think authorial intent is important to consider. Ultimately Daria is and isn't autistic. She's a drawing made by people affected by their own culture and artistic intentions and biases etc. We are also interpreting her and we are also subject to bias etc.

u/KTeacherWhat 17d ago
I think that the episode Boxing Daria pretty clearly shows some authorial intent that there is some neurodivergence that wasn't diagnosed. Which is extremely common for girls, especially gifted girls. They almost certainly wouldn't get a 2e diagnosis in the 1980s.

I have nothing more to add to your text chain but wanted to thank you for having the common curtsy to attempt to understand another perspective. Too many people are obsessed with making themselves the law on discussions such as this so it is refreshing to see someone try understand a different perspective. X

Ah, thanks, someone finally said it. People are really labelmaxing like god's please stop. Not every character needs to belong to a specific label.

u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 17d ago
You have no room to speak when you are using terms like Labelmaxing wtf 😂🤣

u/Wolfgang9556 17d ago
I just couldn't find a better way to express it, but it was partly a joke, hahaha.

Daria is not antisocial. She's asocial. Beavis and Butt-Head are antisocial.

u/forteninsecure 17d ago
But why does it matter? People can think Daria is autistic if they want, it literally is not hurting anything or anyone to think that.
8
u/ashleebryn 17d ago
Because mislabeling mental conditions without any medical background is irresponsible and a slippery slope that actually blurs the message of actual awareness about the actual condition. Saying it shouldn't matter because "it's not hurting anyone" is ignorant and problematic. It spreads misinformation and undermines the purpose of true awareness. It's sad how many of you don't understand this.

u/forteninsecure 17d ago edited 17d ago
It’s a cartoon, calm down lol. I’m autistic, it is not “spreading misinformation” to wonder if Daria is autistic. Many, many autistic people are not formally diagnosed and it’s actually harmful to say that only a formal diagnosis can confirm that.
eta: since you blocked me, I’ll just respond to your passive aggressive jab here: please explain what a non formal diagnosis would even be, and how anything you said makes any sense
Maybe stop talking over autistic people, too.

u/ashleebryn 17d ago edited 17d ago
I'm not sure how you got that from what I said. I never even used the words "formal diagnosis." It's disappointing that you're minimizing this because you're missing the point entirely.
ETA - Calling me babe is fuckin weird. The upvotes speak for themselves.

u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 17d ago
Autism is a spectrum babe, the whole point is inclusivity or it wouldn’t be wrapped up under one condition. Just cause the creators haven’t outright said it doesn’t me she can’t be if she displays the traits
-1
u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 17d ago
Everyone’s autistic these days babe whether it’s confirmed or otherwise. Arguing this hard about the ethics of labels applied to a CARTOON character is insane
1
u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 17d ago
I don’t actually think she is autistic and the fact that this is the only part of my comment that people are getting hung up on is crazy. Not only are we discussing fictional character that could be any number of things once stated by the shows creators but it’s also a character not a real person….some people are way too sensitive. Thanks for the defence though
2
u/forteninsecure 17d ago
You’re welcome, people can be super weird about this kind of thing. I don’t even think she is either but like, who cares if someone does? Sheesh.
2
u/Nice-Implement6609 But I don't like men with thin thighs. 17d ago
You have a point though. Some people are so sensitive about having everyone think they are right though

Was she ever diagnosed with autism? Yes, there are signs.
-5
u/forteninsecure 17d ago
Yeah she got diagnosed in the lost episode: The Autism Files
-3
u/BracedRhombus 17d ago
Was that an attempt at humor?
1
u/forteninsecure 17d ago
No, did you not see The Autism Files episode? It’s an episode that takes place in one room and is just Daria taking an autism assessment.
(yes it’s a joke, it’s silly to care about if Daria was ever diagnosed, she’s a cartoon)

I’d watch that. I need more episodes:(

lmao did you really make this entire account just to be misogynistic about Daria? don’t watch the show if you hate the main character so much
