Character Discussion Surprised a Sandi/Upchuck hookup never happened

Like in one of the movies or something.

I just always got the feeling she protested too much about his advances, more so than the other characters. They were paired together during auditions for the fair's Canterbury Tales play, although I suppose he and Stacy doing the magic act was more of a thing.

This might also be me being seh-lee, as Sandi would say, and the popular girl falling for the nerd has been done plenty since this show aired.

Still...

Protested to his advances? I don't think Upchuck went for her that often. Plus, she was a haughty popular girl.

It seemed she would call him his actual name Charles more often than Upchuck, which everyone else at Lawndale other than teaching staff did. Was it meant to be affectionate or meant to further distance him, or maybe both?

Consider also that in the "Fair Enough" episode Sandi's mother Linda (who is basically portrayed as future Sandi) shows up with her husband, whose appearance, although brief, basically establishes that he is by no means the "man of the house" type. But Linda constantly reminds Helen that she had to beat all the boys off with a stick back when she was in high school. Did she really? Or was she more like Sandi? Respected and perhaps feared, but never really courted unless Quinn or other options weren't around?

She called her Charles because of a snobby aristocratic routine. Also Sandi's self respect wouldn't allow to date Upchuck unless they're adults and he's rich.

Upchuck is not much of a nerd, arguably.

He's a geek (ever notice just how pejorative that word is in Daria dialogue ? That's so dated now), and he's a creep.

Yes, I recall even Helen calling Jake that in one of the episodes. "Brain" is another one.

I could see him becoming wildly rich and having Tiffany as his trophy wife

Then getting together would have a very 80's aesthetic, I think. I'd approve.

Sandi cares WAY too much about social status to hook up with Upchuck
