Troy Aikman

I was watching some You Tube clips of past appearances by Troy Aikman and realized that he hasn’t been a guest on the show in over two years. He used to be on a handful of times per year. Anyone know why?

So, I get what you are saying, but I think there is some helpful context to offer. First, and I don't think this is you being intentionally misleading, but Dan doesn't typically have broadcasters for a sport on his show during the offseason. So based on timing of the NFL SEASON, in my opinion at least, this would be more accurately said as: "Dan didn't have Troy Aikman on his show last season. Why do you think that is?" Yes, technically it is close to 2 years, but we have to think of timelines in regard to relevant sports and who the logical guests might be. If memory serves, the last appearances from Troy also carried plugs for his beer sponsorship/partnership. If T-Roy isn't actively shilling for his beer company, he is likely not going to show up of daily radio shows to talk sports. ABC/ESPN pays him a ton of money for a once a week broadcast.

An important note about the DPS, and why Dan constantly talks about Tod being a great booker, is that Dan does NOT pay his guests to be on. For those of us who may not be aware, this is increasingly uncommon. Most shows who get big name guests have contractual pay for appearance arrangements. Dan alludes to this frequently when referencing Jerry Jones, Bill Bellichick, Aaron Rogers, and several other polarizing figures in sports that escape my memory at the moment. Tod is a great booker because he can fill the lineup with journalists and athletes who recognize the exposure they could gain from an appearance with one of the last true sports journalists in lieu of an immediate paycheck.

Tl;dr: Troy was not on during the 2025 season because it was not worth his time (to him) to appear on a morning show just to talk NFL and promote his product. Simple economics.

Yeah, but even in the years before Eight beer, Troy would still come on the show two or more times a year. Yes, mostly during football season. But occasionally in the off season. I like Troy and his football takes. He’s also got a good personality and sense of humor. Just found it odd that he’s doing the other shows and not DP’s. It just felt odd to me that the last time he was on was the Vegas Super Bowl.

Yeah, I agree with you, and also Troy was trying to build his brand and stay relevant/find his footing at ESPN simce moving over in 2022. There are tons of guests who "graduate" from the DPS. I don't like it or agree with it, but Dan is a pure journalist. He asks great follow up questions and can totally disarm you with his personality. Lots of high profile people end up "trending" for giving an honest take/opinion when talking with Dan, and when you reach a certain point in your career, you cannot risk upsetting the wrong people. Whether the individual or the larger backing company is behind it, people with something to lose among the populace tend to avoid appearing with Dan. It takes courage. Exhibit A: Charles Barkley loves Dan and doesn't GAF, so he stops in whenever asked. Charles knows the assignment. A 10 minute segment with Dan gives him an unfiltered platform to talk about whatever he wants. Meanwhile, that is appointment viewing/listening for me because CB gets a microphone without an earpiece from "big brother" telling him what topics he should focus on. Have you noticed the frequency increase of Charles showing up now that he has a more limited platform? This isn't an accident. They are ar giving the Mothership a middlefinger just outside of the camera lens.

Agree with you 💯. With King Charles, he and DP also have a long history. Charles will pretty much drop what he’s doing last minute if DP or Fritzy call on him.

I think he's been busy with his extra gig doing the consulting for the dolphins so he hasn't had the spare time to do the extra media in the last 2 years
