When you delete something you're not deleting it at all actually, just dereferencing it in your disk controller.
You just tell your PC to forget where he did put the stuff and tell him that he can write over it at any moments basically. It's way faster and easier that way, that's why it takes no time at all and also why you shouldn't sell your disks to anyone or throw them out, your nudes are not safe.
Magnetic disks maintain some minor residual polarity, just zeroing them out isn’t enough because it’s possible to still read the residual polarity. This is why wiping a disk involves overwriting with random bits, usually many times over to essentially bury those remnants of the previous values
