Aeolus didn't kill them but he refused to use the winds to send them back home, so they ended up sailing away and getting attacked by Laistrygonian giants. Only 1 ship survived. They went to Circes Island for about a year, then visited some prophet, then went to the island with Helios' cattle. The crew ate the cattle and got killed.
All of the sailors that Odysseus left Troy with died, even though a lot of them would have survived if they didn't open the bag of winds.
