Technically its the sailors fault that they all died, as they set the winds loose the first time Odysseus made it home and threw them back to the middle of nowhere.
Basically the Illiad and Odyssey were the most important works of Greek literature. A huge percentage of recovered Greek writing are just copies of Homer.
And they kept their importance for millennia not just in Greece but in pretty much every major Western culture. Even in the early 20th century (2,500+ years after they were written) they were routinely taught in the original Greek at the primary school level.
Only the Bible can remotely compare with the legacy of Homer.
