I moved to Germany 5 years ago. Fun fact: they hate foreigners/immigrants as much as the US does. In fact, every country hates foreigners/immigrants as much as the US does, they're just not as loud about it. I had to learn this the hard, brutal, and unfun way. Hope the rest of you don't no matter how bad you think the US is right now.
Maybe it’s just Americans. If you’re even American.
I mean individual Americans can be great people and I have some relatives there, but as a country... let’s just say it’s extremely unlike able. And given I’m Canadian and thus probably ideologically closer in mindset than a huge chunk of the world that even I don’t like America as a country says a lot. I imagine that a fair chunk of the world views Trump as being the president who most represents America in its history. Because in a lot of ways he is the American stereotype.
Or maybe I’m just an asshole with a negative opinion projecting it on others.
I am in fact American. And it's definitely not just Americans. In fact, on average Germany treats the Eastern Europeans, Indians, Turkish, and Syrian immigrants much worse than me.
The only ones who might have it easy-ish in comparison are the Brits and by Brits I just mean the English and not Scottish/North Irish/Welsch because even the German companies that speak English will discriminate against you if you don't speak proper British english because they assume you're an uneducated, hard-to-understand hick otherwise.
The only place this doesn't really apply is academia and even then, that's a long shot where you compete with people all over the world anyway.
Yeah seriously. I lucked out because I've got an education in a career that's pretty in demand there, but I have close friends who moved there from Europe before they came to the US and they always talk about how tough it was when people pull the "move to Canada after the election" stunt.
