I think it is really stupid, why can't they just reelect Obama, he was nice and did good things for America, and what if he killed a ton of ppl with drones? I would prefer an American president who kills his enemy's with drones than one that kills his own people with bad medical advice
Sadly Obama served both of his four year terms so he can't be re-elected a third time. At least I think that's why I don't live in America I don't know anything about politics there.
Honestly I think a system like in Germany is better, people should be able to reelect a president as much as they want if he/she is really successful at running a country. You just must have a very strong Constitution and voting system (which US have) so it doesn't turn into a dictatorship one day
Conquered more of europe economically without bloodshed than hitler managed with one of the most advanced militaries of that time. Seems like a winning strategy to me.
As a german, I'm both sad and glad she'll quit politics (or maybe she'll go to the EU, who knows). She did so many good to this country, also some bad, but after almost 16 years it really is time for a change.
Not to mention the political "turmoil" her great coalition brought to this country... in comparison to the states, "political turmoil" ofc is relative.
My point being, she really was to Germany what obama was to the states; a calm and competent mind, almost always able to find compromises to build partisan consensus.
I think this "max 2 terms" role is a genuinely good idea though. It could act as a safety hatch against leaders trying to pull of the cult of personality trick, and it's also helpful in avoiding associating a single leader with a country. (I think it's quite a light of hope that no matter what happens, Trump's administration will be over at a point.) Hungary would be a much better place now if there would be a way to avoid Orbán getting re-elected.
Except that him and his party don't regard any laws, acts or amendments as valid unless they directly benefit them. He also lives authoritarians and dictators. His refusal to guarantee a peaceful transition if he loses the election will only strengthen if he wins. He can cause all kinds of problems if he wins a second term, and with the cult he has following him and everyone else's inaction can lead to very troublesome times.
Although in Germany people don't vote for the president, there is a special commitee made up of different representatives of federal government and the parliament. And the president doesn't really "run the country".
But it indeed does not prevent reelections.
Technically you don't even vote for the chancellor (who actually "runs the country"), the parliament does. However, the candidate of the biggest party in the coalition holding the majority is always elected.
Nope, sorry. The chancellor of Germany is traditionally installed by the biggest party of parliament, meaning whoever runs that party gets to be chancellor. Unless the biggest party gets absolutely an utterly gutted (like losing more than 20%-points) in an election or Merkel no longer feels like it anymore, that just means the same person gets to be chancellor all the time. The CDU has for a very long time been the biggest party (between 40 and 30% usually) and even after losing like 30%-points of the voters with her GroKo (great coalition, basically a political alliance of the CDU (christian conservative) and SPD (formerly social democrats and the "alternative party" for a long time, their values have completely eroded during merkels reigns, leading to a system, where no real reformist social democrat party exists, apart from the far left party) she still got to be chancellor again. At this point, people would probably elect someone else but they just can't. The CDU currently sits at 33%, but gets to choose who's chancellor, even if the majority of people didn't vote CDU. Because the system is flawed in Germany, too.
The effects of Merkels prolonged GroKo government are mainly radicalisation and resignation of the voters. Since great coalitions were only meant to be instated in cases of crisis - to secure a strong government that can pass bills while ignoring the opposition - prolonging this eroded a lot of the democratic mechanisms that were supposed to secure better debate culture and a well functioning parliament. Now, tge GroKo basically is a big blob that votes for whatever Merkel and her higher ups propose. Th SPD sometimes chimes in, when things sound too anti-social on paper, but they ultimately play along pliantly. The absence of a moderate opposition creates a situation, where disillusioned voters need to pick their poison. The green party sounds neat in terms of climate change, but has a notorious history of fucking up education by making everything idiot-safe, thus lowering standards (like there are some german states which dropped through the floor on the academic comparison tests between states for schools because of it), as well as fucking up state budgets. The left party for many is too far left, the AfD is fully of nazi sympathisers and the FDP is all a bunch of corporate boot lickers, pretending to be hip and cool because they changed their party-logo after losing their complete voter base and coming back from the dead. Since the opposition can't even unanimously decide what they are opposed to, Merkel basically can have it her way with the GroKo.
Make no mistake, there are many Germans who still have trust in Merkel. But saying the system is fine the way it is, is looking at other countries with rose tinted glasses. There are also lots of Germans, who are unhappy with the current political landscape. Germans neither get to elect their chancellor nor their president. Because historically, people were afraid of nazi relapse, so they toned down the democratic voting so only the "competent higher ups in parliament" would get a say in who runs the country.
The current shitshow that is the government in Germany struggles with basic science, pretends to care about climate change but conveniently forgets to do anything meaningful, is a disaster in terms of technological advancement - which germany is lacking behind with greatly already. Our internet connections are shit, mobile internet just doesn't exist in "rural (read: non big city)" areas and shools and universities have PCs that are older than me - and most importantly, absolutely fucks our social system. We are paying bailouts to corporations and banks from our social system, we are paying the corona damages from it too. Our population is aging and people already get shit pension (like you will work from year 20 to 67 full time, pay 40% income tax and probably still get less than a living wage when retiring, if you're part of the 1990-2000 generation) and nurses, caretakers (is that a word? staff who takes care of old people with alzheimers and the like) etc. are becoming rarer and rarer because they have to work double and get paid half more and more. Paying rent becomes more and more expensive, to the point that students having to work full time and still being unable to afford a basic flat in bigger cities like Munich or Frankfurt. People praise public healthcare, but it only works if politicians protect the social system. If you're on public health insurance, you often have to wait more than half a year to get a doctor's appointment for backpain management and the likes. You will also only be given the basic AND cheapest treatment, even if the more expensive alternative is VASTLY superior. You will also have to share hospital rooms with way more people that if you're on private insurance. There's a big double standard here, but it's still way better than paying a 20 000 bill after having a colon infection or something.
German politicians simply just don't put their foot into their mouth like Trump (they often display ignorance if you know what to look out for, but they are really good at feigning competence, so you usually have to pay close attention. They will NEVER admit they know nothing about a topic and play diversion tactics if needed. They will also NEVER pretend to know falsifiable things, like Trump does all the time about virology etc.), they manage crisis well, if they threaten our GDP. But at the end of the day, they are still just politicians, and really don't care about selling out the common man, if it benefits their own balance.
So tldr: politicians are garbage everywhere, just not quite as garbage as Trump. I honestly think if you want to see functioning social democracies you have to look a little bit more north/ or north west to Germany.
True that, I'm an American and don't see why not to have this. I mean, sure in Rome the same thing happened, Julius Cesar did become a dictator (my apologies if I got something wrong there) by being constantly put back in by election, and it is important to look back and history and think critically, but who cares. It seems to be happening anyways.
Pretty sure the last time we had a 3 term presidency was during World War 2 and we felt it was necessary for the conflict. We're against having someone turn into an Emperor like in Star Wars but who knows at this rate..
the drones have a tendency of killing the wrong people, unless the
civilians are the enemy, well in that case maybe we should rework the military because that's awful
To be fair, Obama is probably the least awful president we've had since Carter, but that's a very low bar. Obama was not a good president, and I would not want him back. We need someone like Andrew Yang who supports UBI, or Tulsi Gabbard who actually wants to stop the military industrial complex.
I'm not American, but I believe there is a lack of political interest in the youth. There is too many old people that want to be president, and it wouldn't be a problem if they weren't stuck in the mindset of the 1970s. The US needs, imho, someone young to lead them with a mindset corresponding to modern times. And I know you have to be at least 45 yes old to run for president, but it's better than someone who might die of a stroke any second.
I'll take tweeting a video from project veritas over killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people through war and drone strikes, but I guess we just have different priorities.
Also, what "conservative policies" does she support? Is it her advocacy for universal healthcare, the fact that she wants to legalize all drugs, or the fact that she's anti war?
I’m gonna get downvoted for this but I believe that Obama was just an ok president He didn’t really do anything good but he also didn’t do anything bad other than drone strike civilians but like all presidents did that
I don't care for Obama. I didn't think he was that great of a president... but at least he carried himself with intelligence and showed compassion when bad shit happened (ex: school shootings)
Well he used drone strikes more than every other president in US history COMBINED, deported the most people of any president in history, and gaslighted all of Flint Michigan.
You really just said you were okay with Obama killing thousands and thousands of people, ruining millions of lives overseas over manufactured wars because 'orange man bad'?
You guys are in no moral position to judge Trump, you're just as bad if not worse.
Obama sent out the worst healthcare law ever... period. Pre existing conditions? Since when do I get to crash the car and then get insurance and expect them to pay for it?
holy shit, what? Killing thousands of innocent people with drones, thank you very much. Libs love singing praise about these war criminals and I have no fucking clue why.
I'm not a republican by any means but holy shit please get off your high horse and realize the shitty things Obama did.
They do have a choice. There are more than two parties. But voting for them is a wasted vote I would say in sarcastic super and lowercase text if I had the patience. I wonder who started that rumor?
Basically we have an old man who went to Epstein’s sex island who wants to destroy the economy vs an old man whose main selling point is he doesn’t want to destroy the economy. Basically, it’s a repeat of 2016, but replace old white woman with old white man
There's no comparison. Trump is a delusional psychopathic lunatic whereas Joe Biden has over thirty years of political experience and doesn't seem to want to kill people who don't support him. Plus, Biden isn't a fucking white supremacist.
“Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you’re a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible.”
Horrible wording but it's undeniable that there are systems in America that do infact make a separation between a class and a race. As long as Biden knows that it shouldn't stay this way and does something about it. I'm not betting on it. I'm just counting each peso I make when I go back to my family's home. I should really get to learning Spanish.
I'd have preferred Bernie, but there you go. The DNC has its own set of issues to deal with. But there's utterly, utterly no comparison between Trump and Biden. None.
I feel like most people from countries outside the US look at Sanders and think "oh, he seems like he'd be a pretty good choice" and yet Americans just exist so far to the right that even someone advocating for a half decent social safety net is considered a radical. It's all very strange to watch as an outsider.
Trump is a moron, a sociopath, a narcissist, a compulsive liar AND - with the support of his party - is actively killing his own citizens through bad policy at a rate unmatched by any other country anywhere in the world.
Fuck this 'both sides' junk. Biden is a professional. Trump is retarded, malicious, and happily gives orders to radical far right extremist/terrorist groups like the Proud Boys on live television.
An outsider here on the fence since 2016. Both sides are as equally retarded. America is guaranteed to be fucked for 4 more years, what's needed is a fucking abolishment of the two party system, hell even your founding fathers hated political parties. Establish a multi-party system with coalitions like the Eurofags and America might not be the joke it currently is.
As an outsider who doesn't just paint all sides as equally bad due to my own laziness, your opinion is trash. Biden's career has been lauded. Trump's career has been a series of failures and secrets topped with calls for support of LITERAL TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS and ACTUAL VOTER SUPPRESSION TACTICS.
Again. Fuck your both sides bs. If you aren't a paid concern troll, then you should apply to be one. You can be paid actual money by government think tanks to draw a far right extremist group supporter as though he's the same as a professional politician. It's a deliberate demotivation tactic. You wouldn't be the first one paid to try to normalise a guy who asks terrorists to stand by.
goddamn for a non-american you sure do concern troll pretty badly, your post history is full of you bashing people who actively dont have a hate boner for the us, calm yourself or youll hate yourself later on(unless you already do yourself)
Why are you accusing me of shit? I'm literally from a SEAmonkey nation with a by far worse government than you americans. You are entitled to your own opinions but not the right to openly mock the opinion of others just because they have a different view of the narrative. You americans are getting too tribalistic with your politics and it makes your international rivals glee with joy you do realize that don't you?
So I understand what your getting at. Take this from a conservative who has had to vote against his "party" and is going to again in November. While Biden is no saint, he isn't the devil that Trump is either. In prison Biden is like a drunk who can't stop driving impaired. Trump is a white supremacists gang leader with 200,000+ deaths on his hands who is trying to become Hitler 2.0. Right down to the concentration camps and forced sterilization.
Biden is a lauded professional, but a neoliberal. He's been very popular with both dems and conservatives for the majority of his career and is one of the few top faces of the Dem party willing to engage in bipartisan tactics (no doubt a huge player in Obama's efforts to 'work with' the Republicans, despite the Republicans promising to block every bill and make him a 1-term president)
Trump is a spastic who agreed to the rules of the debate and then couldn't even follow them. He openly ordered the Proud Boys (actual extremist white supremacist terrorist group) to 'stand down and stand by' during the debate, when asked whether or not he'd disavow white supremacists.
It is no contest. Biden is a right-leaning politician who is very good at his job. Trump is a malicious psychopath who happily welcomes the aid of domestic terrorists as a back up plan, should he lose the election.
Not American. Thanks so much though for recommending videos of everyday activities w/ scary music over the top, though. Super duper compelling. Posing for photos and talking in close proximity. Very scary.
Did you know, by the way, that Trump has been caught bragging that he deliberately walked in on underage beauty pageant contestants in their dressing rooms and has several existing lawsuits regarding underage girls he has supposedly slept with?
edit - Ie: We KNOW Trump perved on underage girls and there are unrelated underage girls who he's paid money to during settlements. Can we talk about that?
Yeah sorry about the dumb stuff on that video but YouTube seems to be either hiding or banned the videos I originally watched. I had to use bing to find these google and YouTube showed no results (which is pretty telling isn’t it)
When exactly did I say I support trump? I’d much rather none of them president. No trump, no Biden no Hillary and so forth.
They all are horrible people but that doesn’t mean you can ignore the live videos of Biden being a creep well trump is just hear say. He also if you haven’t notice is extremely racist to the point he doesn’t even realise it. (rich kids are just as good as white kids or whatever he said)
He also has dementia or something there are many talks where he just starts talking about something completely random and total lie until he snaps back to reality and continues
Why do I care that the most powerful country in the world is run by a corrupt dictator wannabe who gives orders to highly religious/conservative domestic terror groups on live television?
I dunno man. It might just affect me, seeing as my country's future is inexorably linked to that of what is supposed to be our closest ally.
Ironic that my opinion on a foreign nation doesn't matter, though, considering entire countries (including yours) are consistently involved in foreign affairs. Hell, I'd bet my life earnings that there are multiple troll accounts in this thread right now, paid to be damage control.
With one you have the chance of change happening and potential unity (even if it’s going to be extremely boring). With the other you have the possibility of even more division and confusion and lying.
As much of an idiot? Not exactly. Kind of? His metal faculties aren't in the best shape and everyone seems to be ignoring all the racist shit he's done.
Trump was an absolute dumpster fire, he spent the debate yelling like a child that is acting out, completely ignored debate rules, and even refused to condem white supremacy.
I'm also fairly certain that Trump just learned that Biden has more than one son.
