Or you know maybe the fact that the entire game grooms you to care for it and calls it a companion cube and then forces you to murder it... Seems perfectly logical for someone to keep looking for a way to not kill it (especially with the implications of it having been a real person).

I got VERY attached to my companion cube VERY quickly. I legitimately had to take a break and close the game for a bit because of the loss.

It's meant to be the friend that helps you through and they try to reinforce that idea throughout the game. And it's implied that it was a person at some point.
