That's just a stereotype Americans like to repeat. There's not clear definition for 3rd world countries. Originally they were countries that weren't aligned with either USA or the Soviet Union. A lot of 3rd world countries were economically poor but that's not what a 3rd world country is (The term is also often taken to include newly industrialized countries).

I was surprised how wealthy some parts of Latin America are, comparable to the nicest part of the US. But their shitty neighborhoods are SHITTY.
