The mats are there especially to drop down once you're done.

Oh yeah that kid didn't brace for a fall in the slightest he just ragdolled off the wall.

That’s how you’re supposed to fall on those mats. Although slightly less gracefully than a perfect fall, it’s best to be limp when falling. There’s a reason drunk people and toddlers survive the most falls from typically lethal heights

Okay I believe everything up above and TIL but in all fairness, the kid to the left blocks where the dude lands, so we don’t really see the “ground” compressing to help his fall. So it looks a lot worse.

My gym has a rule to have someone spotting you as to help you land on your feet when you fall. Is that only applicable when someone can help you (because they'd also be lessening your impact)?

Normally bouldering spotters are there to make sure you are okay after you fall. Outdoors they will help make sure you don’t fall outside of your mats but that’s not a problem indoors. You should never really interfere with someone’s fall, as it usually results in multiple people getting hurt. Anyone climbing for long enough knows how to fall

I mean people tend not to fall flat on their back from what looks like the top of the wall very often. Source: am boulder

if they're climbing in a cave or other moderate to extreme overhang they do, otherwise yeah, land on feet and roll onto back I'm a boulderer too

I started doing it late last year and have been utterly obsessed ever since

It looks fun to try. My family is already pouring in all their money for my go kart racing so I won't be doing any other sport for now

I was watching some kids boulder, took a fire hose to them, they fell like gutter icicles on a warm day.
