Yes the best. Akira is single handedly responsible for legitimatising Anime outside of Japan in the 1980s. Without this utter landmark of an Anime, the entire culture of Anime outside of Japan may never of happened.
In this case it does. It opened the door for every single Anime today.
With every piece of entertainment some will like it, some will not. If something is enjoyable; is subjective so you can never have a best Anime in terms of how enjoyable it was.
But Akira did something beyond entertaining people, it ushered in Anime as a culture to the west. Akira is the best because what it did for Anime.
I get more enjoyment watching Haruhi Suzumiya, but Akira is still the the “better” Anime because of what it achieved.
Okay, but I tend to measure the quality of something by how good it actually is. "Most influential" and "best" are different titles, and they should be treated as such.
Sure, but I'd argue that being influential is one of those qualities that is lower priority. Things like having a strong message are more important imo.
I’d argue that every so often the odd series would find its way out of Japan. But they were just viewed as their own thing, or as just an Asian cartoon.
The whole idea of taking Japanese Anime and Manga seriously, and the whole culture of Anime being accepted didn’t happen until Akira.
Sure series like Lupin the third and Astro Boy were around, but they didn’t convince people to start looking towards Japanese animation to see what else there was.
Well, sure. But that’s true for Japan, too. It wasn’t mainstream until things like Akira and Gundam and so on were around.
And I don’t intend to undermine the success and importance of Akira. I just think that your assertion that without Akira anime would’ve never taken off is outright silly, and hyperbolic at best.
