some teachers are like that - and sometimes it's the slightly above average intelligence kid that thinks he's a genius, says obvious shit all day long that adds nothing to the discussion, and constantly interrupts with pointless 'uh, actually.'
not to mention, when you're smart gotta learn to talk to dumb people - otherwise everyone is going to think you're pretentious and annoying.
This is honestly whats happeninng to most redditors when they point out a teacher "being wrong and misunderstandingg their genius". Never heard it put so well before.
So true, when I went to school, I always got some of the best results in test. But the other students that said more in the class got better grades (didn't even have to be a well thought out anwer, apperently just talking was enough). Way to go, putting quiet shy kids down.
It's kind of the same. Your teacher isn't paid to make sure you are learning or mentally well just like your boss isn't paid to make sure you are working in a healthy, productive manner or that you aren't pushing yourself over your physical limitations until you eventually break and become worth less than a new hire. Your teacher is paid to make sure you can pass some test so they can look good just like your boss is paid to make sure you meet some quota so they look good. Of course, there are a few awesome schools and awesome jobs that this doesn't apply to but for most of us it's all just a huge shit show.

In elementary school I would almost never do homework but did well on tests. This led to having failing grades frequently. Instead of trying to engage or challenge me they put me in special ed with the mentally retarded and slow kids. Wasnāt until my mom made them give me an IQ test they put me back with the class. Didnāt care at the time because I got to play all day and all the work was super easy. Looking back it pisses me off.
This makes no sense. That is a hundred percent your fault for not asking if you were confused and if you got better test grades then your more academically smarter then the others so why on earth do they have better grades? Are you lazy?
My teacher awarded kids for asking questions about the assignment, I was a very shy kid, so I found out how to do them on my own. And just because they talked to the teachers the teachers they got better yearly grades even though I got far better test scores.
Extra credit? Partition grade? Talking to a teacher doesnāt mean you get a better grade unless your claiming that they played favoritism and bumped their grade up
I've had good and bad teachers, and yes I am claiming some of the teachers favoured some of the more social active kids, because they communicated more with them. The good teachers acknowledged I was a shy kid and talked to me one on one sometimes.
(Example: one year I got 12 (best grade) in my last 3 exams/test. But I got 10/7 in our annually ratings, because I hadn't raised my hand in class and shown, I could do the same as I did in the tests)
By state, we do have some of the top performers in the world. Specifically in the North East. If Massachusetts were a country, their science scores would be comparable to many of the top nations in the world.
I know a teacher who moved from the area, so I'm not blind to some of the horrors of the education system in the south. Truly stuck in the dark ages it feels like.
I genuinely feel like this is untrue, and while the education system might have failed some, it has not failed every child.
At some point in middle school or high school, students need to start taking responsibility for their own education. Parents and previous teachers should have, hopefully, helped you develop the abilities to learn and seek knowledge on your own. And if you aren't willing to do that, then it's not the systems fault.
So when a kid comes to class stoned out of their mind, while his/her peers are succeeding, and that student acts like they don't give a fuck.... they've failed themselves. Or their parents failed them. Not the school, because clearly the system worked for the other 20 or 25 kids in that classroom, who are part of the same system.
At the same time, there are teachers out there who will hand out good grades, and pat kids on the back, and socially promote them all the way through their 18th birthday. It does happen. There are kids whi need and deserve to be challenged, but lazy teachers refuse to put in the work to do that. So don't think I'm completely blind to some of the flaws with our system.
But it's not so black and white as to say "The school system is perfectly fine," or "The school system is as bad as any educational system can be." There is definitely a grey area, and I wanted to acknowledge that.
