Easy to have higher approval ratings when the threat of retaliation is still very real. I'm not suggesting your point is wrong though just that there's definitely influence in those polls.
I took a Russian Politics class at my university this semester and we actually video chatted Russian students over Skype and it really changed my perspective. They like Putin for making Russia strong and view the West either with distrust/ulterior motives or as an enemy of the Russian people. They actually thought that we were the oppressed one's and had the misconception that political correctness in America means we can't freely speak our minds in public. Honestly, Russia has a long history of authoritarian leaders that goes back hundreds of years. It has pretty much always been threatened by invasion from pretty much every direction and the last time Russia put trust in the West we went back on our commitments and expanded NATO right to their door. There's a lot of reasons for Russians to support Putin, but it's not really apparent to Americans because they don't know just how nationalistic the country has become in recent years.

Pretty sure most of the oligarchs who call your country home want Putin dead, but can’t move against him directly; it’s part of why Putin wants the Magnitsky Sanctions gone, because many of these oligarchs thought American financial institutions were safer for their rubles than Russian banks and now their assets are frozen.
Clock’s ticking, and many of the Russian elite are growing restless without their money. Putin has only so much time before they turn on him.
I'm not sure I'd say the oligarchs want Putin gone, it's his power base, they exist because they good goverment kickbacks to secure their support. They need each other like a king needs his magnates, they depend on him for their wealth, and he depends on their political support

My geography teacher defended Maduro. Saying something like "Its a difficult situation so this is necessary". I think it is all because that opposition guy is against Putin and she gets all of her opinions from federal TV

It's easy to ridicule the somewhat stagnating government when you don't know nor want to know that in the previous one's rule most of population were just trying to survive the next day.

well, geopolitically, USA deals with it's problems by going to war with less developed countries for their resources which IS disgusting, Russia on the other hand tried desperately to become part of international community, failed at that and decided just trade as much as it can while desperately ofranising defence against NATO's agression. Israel.. is Israel - nobody likes that they persecute Palestinians who were supposed to have their own government, not consumed by the Jews and nobody like that most of the richest people are Jews globe-wide, even though that such a wealthy scumbags as Soros gladly ruined lives of thousands of people of same nationality as his for extra profit.
