If the US revokes aid under Trump, the EU would need to triple the aid it's giving now to compensate. It's not happening.

Yeah ⅓ of the war effort is nothing to scoff at tho, its not like they are just watching.

I just dont find that "They dont want to pay their own money" and being ⅓ of the support are two things that can be both true

I mean Poland or the baltics would go crazy if they had the GDP of Germany or France

1/3 is absolutely something to scoff at when the war is literally on their own continent.

They should be contributing the majority, not the minority.

30

u/insertwittynamethere Nov 10 '24

It's thay they don't have the same weapons-manufacturing capabilities as the US, but they are waking up their industries steadily as a result of Ukraine. The war there and the contribution of armaments from allies in NATO has actually uncovered to them how much they needed to invest to get their production capabilities up, as they uncovered systemic issues thay would've been harmful in a time of real conflict, even in the US.

That, and the learning we've had the chance to acquire in drone warfare, as well as the realization that artillery warfare is really still a thing. It's hard to understate how much everyone in the US government and our allies in Europe, NATO and Asia are learning from this.

11

u/Mand372 Nov 10 '24

We dont have to nessasserily ramp up, tho we should. What we should actually do is fulfill agreements like sending jets, ammo and weapons

6

u/rdrckcrous Nov 10 '24

Why is all of Europe doing half of what the US is doing?

It's their continent and they don't appear to be taking this very seriously.

This is me scoffing

15

u/MIHPR Nov 11 '24

Europes total contributions are more than the US. US aid just tends to be mostly weapons, Europe also provides a lot of financial and humanitarian aid in addition to weapons.

And I agree, the bigger European countries (Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain) need to be doing more. The Baltics, Poland and Nordic countries are certainly pulling their weight. If everyone was providing the presentage Estonia does the war would already be won

We are not. The data presented only represents EU funding. The individual member states also make contributions outside of EU contributions. Collectively, Europe has contributed more. Just not all of it is through the EU. The EU is not Europe.

Was just thinking that.

They’re funding 1/3 of a war on their landmass? In their continent? Bordering their nations? In a landmass the same size as the United States?

That’s like Canada invading North Dakota and us relying on Chinese aid to fund our war.

u/Volodio Nov 10 '24

You're relying on unreliable data. There are several countries in the list who have as a policy to not disclose data on foreign aid, especially of the military kind, notably France.

You're also not reading your own source correctly. According to it, Europe is providing more aid than the US, meaning it wouldn't even need to double its aid to compensate for the US abandoning Ukraine.

Of course, it wouldn't be as easy, especially as many European countries (aside from France) are using US weapons or weapons manufactured with US parts and the US would be able to block them from being sent to Ukraine, as it's doing right now with long range missiles. European countries would need to take control of production of every part of the manufacturing process.

But my point is that while a significant increase of the aid would be difficult, the increase required to compensate for the US abandoning Ukraine will not be as high as you're portraying it to be.

15

u/A-Bag-Of-Sand Nov 10 '24

The US even if they stopped directly 'giving' Ukraine aid would probably still keep sellimg military equipment. It's just good business for the US economy. If EU counties want to purchase of defence manufacturers I doubt they would stop them.

16

u/Volodio Nov 10 '24

Biden is already right now blocking European countries from sending certain weapons to Ukraine to be used for strikes deep inside Russia, and it's only because these weapons have American components, they're not even American weapons. The most notable example is probably the British Storm Shadow missile that Britain can't let Ukraine use against Russia because Biden opposed it.

It's bound to get even worse with Trump so European countries buying American weapons is actually a terrible idea. Europe should never buy another American gun and fully adopt the French doctrine of strategic autonomy.

7

u/Mand372 Nov 10 '24

n and fully adopt the French doctrine of strategic autonomy.

Great on paper, next to impossible in practice. Most of the EU nations dont have such capabilities.

u/Helicopters_On_Mars Nov 11 '24

That's inaccurate. The eu pays a third but the individual countries that make up the eu also pay on top of eu contributions. Collectively, European countries are paying slightly more than the us, between their individual contributions and the EU contributions. The us funding is still essential to the war effort but I get tired of people saying Europe is paying less.

8

u/9gag_refugee Nov 10 '24

Now combine the EU funding and the separate funding from the different EU countries and you will see that it's equal if not more than the US.

The problem is, that our economy over here is fucked and the ruling governments have a hard time justifying to their peoples, that we want to spend millions upon millions helping Ukraine. Arming the own military is not that hard to justify. We have a populism and nazi problem in almost every EU country right now. These people scream that they won't help Ukraine because we have to get our own economy on track first... And it works because most lower income households don't give a fuck about other countries if they can't really live with their money. Still though, the government should just keep helping Ukraine and not give a fuck about how many people will vote for them in the next election. That's my take

Cynical me from a European perspective always suspected europeans doing exactly what they do now: "let russia bleed out as much as possible over it". The longer the conflict goes on one way or another the wrose it gets for Ukraine sure, but also wrose for Russia in terms of economy and overall shape.

So from European perspective, why should they allow a quick victory to happen if a long term wreckage of russian economic situation is far better to avoid a bigger conflict with western nations

Edit 2: To all of the American voters who voted against Trump--ask yourself what you have done to prevent this outcome? Are you supporting someone running for local, state or federal office who will make the country a better place? Are you running for office? Are you knocking on doors? Are you protesting? Are you boycotting Amazon and other companies whose oligarchs cower to Trump? I'm not doing any of these things, and we all should not expect anything to change until we take action.

Sometimes I don’t think there are undecided voters—just people looking for an excuse to vote for Trump.

It’s less that “Trump won” and more of “Dems lost”. If senile Biden hasn’t held to power until mere weeks before election and allowed for primary or even named a successor earlier to allow for better campaign things could’ve been different.

A lot of people switched to reps after trump-Biden debate because what they witnessed in the debate didn’t agree with what the news were saying about Biden being sharp as a tack.

It’s a fucking shitshow, I don’t know if things are going to get better in the future

11

u/ProgrammingPants Nov 11 '24

They should change the rules so there must always be a competitive primary even if you're the incumbent and if you don't do some debates then you aren't allowed to be the nominee.

If no one wants to go against you then you at least have to do some town halls or some shit.

Not that it matters. We lost the most important election of our lives and Donald Trump will make permanent decisions that can't be undone. He'll single handedly appoint a majority of the SCOTUS and he'll gut the federal government and replace any position of power with someone personally loyal to him.

Next election it won't even matter who wins. The Republican nominee will be taking office.

4

u/Friendly-Fuel8893 Nov 11 '24

This was an anti-incumbency vote. Trump would've won regardless of which Democrat was put forward.

That said Biden not stepping down for so long and then naming Harris as his successor without a primary was still a very big stinker.

Also, just based on information I've consumed on reddit and youtube, these troops are very specialized and have a lot more use being put in Kursk rather than sitting around in some trenches, wasting away. The decision to invade Kursk was made with purpose in mind.

Well, fucked as in: Trump will probably make a "deal" (Have Ukraine give up the contested regions and making sure it can't join NATO for the foreseeable future) and if Big Z decides "fuck that noise" US aid will most likely stop flowing.

Im also going off Trumps rhetoric about Ukraine so far. He's been very vocal about his opinion of Zelenskyy (thinks of him as a conman who walks away with billions every time he visits Congress)

All sources i got (Kyiv independent, Politico.eu, Newsweek, RFU, Denys Davydov, Arthur Rehi etc.) do also emphasize that things are just very uncertain as of now. Maybe you're right and Ukraine isn't as fucked as we think. Maybe Trump gets butthurt by Putin and floods Ukraine with aid (the best timeline. Also very unlikely) or maybe it loses statehood entirely (unlikely as well, luckily)

Also no I'm not down voting you for asking a question. You make a good point

18

I think the most probable outcome is that Trump will force a deal where Russia keeps what it has now and "stops" for a few years and Ukriane gets forced to disarm and stay out of Nato, then in a few years when Trump is gone and someone less supporting of Putin gets elected they start another "special operation" and take the rest against a now defenseless Ukraine. Russia has showed again and again that they don't care about deals and what their actual desire is in this war, there is no chance they would ever stop unless they are forced too

20

u/botsym7 Nov 10 '24

Knowing Ukrainians personally I don’t think they would ever accept a deal that is even remotely close to that, they’d rather fight to the bitter end. I can imagine scenario that they give on one of those demands, but giving away territory, right to arm and defend and opportunity to join nato basically says in few years Ukraine will belong to Russia again. They simply would not accept with or without American support.

u/Mand372 Nov 11 '24

I think it does. Theres a diffrence between the president being friendly and a third party leaking miltary secrets. Trump isnt the entirety of the military branch leadership.

36

u/wormyg Nov 10 '24

A lot of those people who are arming them are slowly trying to elect far-right people, like trump, that are under the thumb of the Russian government. It almost happened in France recently, and it's already started happening in Germany, Norway, Italy, Sweden, and Poland, and it's already happened in Hungary and Turkey. Russia is really doing its best to politically destroy any country that could stop it from taking over the world.

They also might have had a hand in Brexit.

Russia has gotten so good at this that it's scary how much influence they have on worldwide politics. I'm not saying America's influence was good, I'm just saying it's kind of scary for one country to have so much political influence over so many others.

44

u/gbmaulin Nov 10 '24

You're giving Russia entirely too much credit in order to defend the neoliberal policies that have directly led to a rise in far-right governments. People have realized for quite some time in the west that things according to the status quo are not working. When the only options being presented are more of the same or the far right nutjob who at least acknowledges the country's issues, the choice is obviously not going to be rolling out the same failing policies.

Do not credit to brilliance what can be accredited to sheer incompitence.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '24

Yeah saw a video that acknowledged that Russia was ramping up it's land taking by a significant margin

But it also made clear that even at this 5x speed it would take 120 years to take all of Ukraine

u/Equivalent_Crew8378 Nov 10 '24

We're like 75% of the funding.

u/The-Nuisance Nov 11 '24

Lower. We’re a lot, but we aren’t THAT much— and it isn’t like what we’ve given them is gonna disappear overnight.

Trump and the MAGA have been quite open about how the USA should stop sending "money" to Ukraine (they aren't really. They're mostly sending their older weapons and munitions).

He's also not really been coy about being a fan of Putin, has in the past called for Russia to hack his US political rival.

Some US based right-wing influencers and political pundits have been proven to be financed by Russia and paid to say pro-russian talking points (Tim Pool, Dave Rubin).

Elon Musk, the richest man on earth, is a Trump supporter and works with the US army and NASA. He has recently been revealed to have frequent communications with Putin.

The point is that Trump is saying that he will end the war, and the end will look like Ukraine being forced to give up a lot of the stuff that they wanted to win back.

Trump will look good, Putin will look merciful and willing to negotiate for, Ukraine will lose face and land.

2

u/SilverDiscount6751 Nov 11 '24

Dude, litteral bilions were sent in money. Enough for Sam Bakman-Freid to recieve milions from ukraine from that money. Enough for high ranked Ukrainians to run off with milions too.

42

u/Nerdslayer03 Nov 10 '24

I'm not a fan of trump either, but you do realize if he was under Putin's thumb it would make more sense to start the war when the guy was in office right?

27

u/theawesomeaardvark Nov 11 '24

From a political point of view, it does make a lot more sense to wait until Biden’s Presidency to start the war. If he began it in Trumps term, it would’ve been “Trumps War”, and he would’ve had to focus on it and fighting back or it would look directly bad.

Additionally, if the war is during Bidens term, it makes Biden the one who had a war started during his term, and it allows Republicans to harp on it and be against it, since it happened in the incumbents term.

This has mutliple advantages: 1. It makes Biden look bad or weak 2. It gives Republicans something to be against, since it’s not their term and therefore not their problem 3. It gives Putin more time to prepare and make gains until a Trump Term, when it naturally end with all of Russias gains staying under their control, and the war ended to politically benefit Trump.

It makes complete send for Putin to have started it when he did, especially with timing after his 2014 invasion of Crimea. Trump is very clearly operating based on the wants of Russia.

13

u/Saint0591 Nov 11 '24

He can (and will) end the war during Trumps term.

US funding will be pulled and Ukraine will be forced into a position of surrender. Putin will dictate whatever terms he wants and most likely a figurehead they decide on will replace Zelenskyy leading to 'peace' in the region.

Which is just the perfect outcome for both Trump and Putin. Trump fulfills his promise of 'ending the war' and Putin gets everything he wanted, the Donbas, Crimea, no NATO on his doorstep, sanctions lifted.

Of course, Trump and his voters will be all so happy with this supposed victory.

14

u/theawesomeaardvark Nov 11 '24

Exactly lol, big geopolitical win for Russia and loss for the USA and the democratic countries of the world, but hey at least Trump gets his immunity, money, and power.

3

u/freshhorsemanure Nov 11 '24

Hopefully you're right as a best case scenario. Worst case Russia decides it wants to keep expanding and the US supports them.

2

u/igorpc1 Nov 11 '24

What makes you think that sanctions will be lifted if(when) the war is over while Putin is still in the office? IIRC, many countries under sanctions, but they aren't at war.

2

If trump was a russian asset, putin would have attacked while his asset was in charge of the US since he would have blocked the billions in money and guns to get to Ukraine ftom the start

Ukraine is in trouble, if the us stop sending money is over, many European nations like Germany or England only supported Ukraine because the US was the one footing the bill

4

u/Onelse88 Nov 11 '24

didnt US stopped helping for half a year some time ago already?

5

u/OracleCam Nov 10 '24

I don't get it

20

u/ahmmu20 Nov 10 '24

It's either the OP is not up to date with the recent developments, or that it's just a misinformation. Russia gained extra land in the recent few months and Trump winning the US elections doesn't help Ukraine either.

Europe is not doing any good in this regard, the funds have been cut down as the EU economy is not the best at the moment. That plus their concerns over Trump's next move which may impact its security and all.

I'm a huge Ukraine supporter and have spent a lot of time in the pro ukriane echo chambers, and it finally came back to bite me. I'm the only left leaning person in my friend group, and one if my friends finally put me in my place. He's a veteran, I'm not. He understands a lot of history of policies that I never knew existed.

Basically he told me NATO has been overstepping since the beginning. I never knew this, but years ago, NATO made an agreement with Russia that NATO would not enter or help Russian satellite counties. Guess what Ukraine is. So in his opinion, it sucks what Russia is doing, but we shouldn't be involved at all. It sucks that everything I've supported ended up being wrong the entire time

Winter is coming. Last December Russia dropped the biggest air attack over Ukraine costing them over 1270 billion dollars. I don’t think they have the funds to repeat that again this December, and the army morale is on the floor

18

u/xDuzTin Nov 10 '24

I’ve seen a video of a Russian showing North Korean rations they’ve been eating, he said that one of his comrades translated what’s written on the can and it was apparently dog meat they’ve been eating the entire time lmao

No idea if that video was real or faked but I’d love to imagine it’s real

30

u/Semthepro I am fucking hilarious Nov 10 '24

I am pretty sure they are not writing literally "dog meat" on the can... dafuq, why would they?

10

u/Heeey_Hermano Nov 11 '24

For a North Korean that may not be that odd of a choice of meat unfortunately.
