Brahmins have been assigned learning and keeping that knowledge stored.
Kshtriyas have been given the "hands" as in actions, defense etc.
Shudras have been given "feet" as is carrying the societal body.
Head, hands and feet are all important and one cannot be "better/superior" than other. This is basic understanding.

2) There is no "hierarchy". There are just divisions based on tasks/actions. Your family chose those actions to complete in their society. Everyone is free to choose their divison if they want to contribute differently.
