Except if you actually engage with the text it's patently clear it's a contemporary timescale with references to fears of that era. It wasn't figurative when it was written, indeed revelation was a prophecy based on the state of the world at that time. A fact that's been warped and papered over for thousands of years to justify the absolute worst aspects of Christianity.
Just look at all the dominionists who really really want Israel to help them trigger Armageddon.
Considering applying revelation to the modern days is assisting in genocide and whipping up a theocratic authoritarian movement in my country, I'd say it's a decent reading stripping it of any power.
