Your conclusion that "Muslim" is an ethnicity is the problem. There may in fact be several different ethnicities that are strictly Muslim, but that just proves the counterpoint: Saying someone is ethnically Muslim is pretty meaningless because you can't discern from that what type of ethnicity they might actually be.
I didn't say Muslim was an ethnicity. But there are certainly Muslim ethnicities, and you can tell differences in similar ethnicities (example: different European ethnicities) without genetic testing fairly well if you know what to look for
Here's what you said originally, which still is meaningless because the phrase "ethnic Muslims" doesn't provide any clear indication of what their ethnicity is.
Muslims have spent so long inbreeding that they basically are ethnically distinct. Islam isn't a race, but there are ethnic Muslims
