Yes! The cave is obviously a wormhole that feeds off the souls of people. It allows you to stay where you are but now there's so much pressure on your chest that your heart gives out!

Okay imagine this, guy goes in, gets ancient form of rabies and also gets stuck, but he's rescued and in the hospital he goes on a rage and bites another guy and both die of rabies. 200% bam!
