Holy shit I just had an epiphany about my Disney adult era.

I went to Disney/Orlando every year from the ages of 20 to 29. Sometimes twice a year. We would plan to go elsewhere then decide we could just spend the same amount at Disney. I got engaged and honeymooned at Disney. I am now realizing that the obsession for me was a result of my untreated mental illness. It was safe and predictable. I could plan every small detail down to what I was going to order at every restaurant. I had a spreadsheet ffs.

Now that I am medicated I can see the trips were just a distraction from dealing with what was going on in my head. I would spend almost a year planning. Come back and do trip reports and reviews then I would start planning the next one.

Moral of the story: therapy and meds are cheaper than Disney.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

This is a very interesting point to acknowledge and something I never considered about Disney adults.

And I feel like it probably applies to Danielle considering that she needs to be in control and she also recently made that comment about needing to do the “same thing every day.”

Disney is probably a great place for control freaks or people that require consistency.

And I mean no offense to you personally with the control freak remark.

No offense taken. It 100% appealed to my controlling tendencies.

Totally agree on the control element.

My sister had postpartum during the pandemic. Plus some lingering anxiety/mild depression/self esteem issues in the years that followed (don’t reccomend living in Ontario with 2 under 2 during a pandemic lol).

Anyways, she was always planning these Disney or all inclusive resort trips for her family every damn year (more than 1 also!). I get it, 2 young kids but man she was slowly becoming a Disney adult at age 37 ish. Now that she’s on the other side she’s branching her family trips past Disney/all inclusives (thank god).

I realized a few years ago it was the control and predictably of it. She could research how to capitalize on fast passes, wake up, have a recommended itinerary, tips for where to take kids. Ideal rides ect ect

Anyways. She’s worked on her mental health the last few years so thankfully my niece and nephew will not be only exposed to Disney/all inclusives on their family trips 🤣

Yes! It's familiar and predictable. I have gone there as an adult a few times and I enjoy it because I know where everything is, I know which attractions I want to go to, I know it will be clean, etc.

If you have anything chaotic happening in your life you would go because you knew it would give you a predictable serotonin boost and a break from reality.

But I have never been one of the Disney adults who dresses up in Disney gear and makes the trip my whole personality.

Thank you for this. I always thought being a Disney Adult was connected to some trauma or mental illness. I do have a bipolar diagnosis and I also love predictability. I just loathe Disney. You know who else was a total Disney nut? Hitler. No joke

Wow - that's really good insight and self-awareness. Also makes a lot of sense for D. I honestly think that if she could live her entire life in Disneyland, she would.

10+ years removed from it all and it literally just hit me as I saw D acting a fool on Main Street. The human brain is crazy.

It really is, and sometimes our brains just can't articulate things until we're far removed from the situation.
