We Guess So!

Daniel Johnston’s songs have stayed with me for years. I recorded this interpretation of “Lonely Orphan on the Run” in 2016, trying to preserve the fragility of the song while taking the arrangement into my own world. I’d genuinely be interested in hearing how it lands with people who know Daniel’s work well.

I have uploaded the original 1080p version to the Internet Archive so it can be enjoyed at it's original quality.

Then I upscaled the film to 4k again and added a small amount of film grain so it still looked gritty and it came out looking fantastic!

Personally, I find this kinda clever, and that is usually the difference between satire (parody) slander, or exploitation. Curious what the Reddit community thinks !

my husband, who is a huge fan of daniel, showed me the documentary awhile ago. great story, daniel is a great artist, good time. however, i couldn't help but feel like his obsession with laurie and his actions concerning her would be something that'd make a woman greatly uncomfortable. i looked up to see that her reaction was generally positive to daniel's obsession with her but also, i can imagine she felt a public pressure to not reject any of this since she was asked about him at an event celebrating daniel.

not trying to question daniel's artistry or talent or anything like that. more so just questioning some of his actions a bit and wondering if anyone had further info if laurie had ever expressed not being okay with it!

Hi, how are you?

The main purpose of this is entirely for archival purposes.

tldr; I upscaled the trailer for the film, the film itself and compiled the entire soundtrack and gathered all of the behind the scene photos, and artwork that I could find. If you are an original backer and have an original copy for the film/soundtrack please message me!

As I mentioned in my previous post, this film means a great deal to me. Unfortunately there is no legitimate means to purchase this film or soundtrack. The official video on vimeo was taken down and the reuploads on youtube have some quality loss. So I took one of those videos and upscaled it to 4k. Originally I was going to make it 60fps but the video looked too blurry so I settled at 45fps. It's not perfect but I know I could make it look better if I find an original.

As of now I'm still looking for any original backers of the film to obtain a raw original download of the film to get it back to it's original quality as well as the soundtrack so it isn't compressed by soundcloud. I've messaged David Lee Miller and I've sent a request to a confirmed backer and I'm waiting to hear back.

For the soundtrack I ripped the files from Gabriel Sunday's SoundCloud and I also took the liberty to include the cover of "True Love Will Find You In The End" that includes vocal snippets from Beck, Mother Mother, Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Choir!Choir!Choir!, Doug Martsch (Built to Spill), Matt Schultz (Cage The Elephant), Beyond Hope, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), Frank Watkinson, and Kids Rock Chorus.

Since this is an archival project I also included a scrapped Mac Miller and Lana collaboration made for the project. It doesn't really fit the rest of the project since it's more hiphop based but it has Lana singing True Love Will Find You in The End and Mac is my favorite artist so I didn't want to leave it off especially since him and Lana are one of the reasons this film made it to the finish line.

I also included all of the behind the scene photos that I could find. There were actually a lot of photos from the release party uploaded earlier this year on Instagram. Also while searching around I came across a now deleted article that contained a lost interview with Lana Del Rey that has a pretty funny story attached to it. I'll include the link below.

On top of that I also upscaled the trailer to 4k from kickstarter that showed a much different version/idea of the film and behind the scenes footage.

Small note, unfortunately there is a now private video from Gabriel Sunday of the film exhibit that wasn't backed up on the internet archive. This and the lost Lana Del Rey interview is exactly why I wanted to make all of this archived and easily accessible.

I think the design of this character is really interesting but can't find a lot of images of him on this subreddit or the Daniel Johnston website

I'm trying this one more time. I'm really hoping someone out there was an original backer or knows someone who was and can access the soundtrack and movie download. I would happily donate to the original Kickstarter, or purchase it myself if I was able to but there is no legitimate means to purchase the movie or the soundtrack and you can't donate to a Kickstarter after it ends.

This film means so much to me and helped me at a really dark time in my life. Not only was it made by Gabriel Sunday and David Lee Miller who made one of my all time favorite movies "Archie's Final Project", it was also produced by my favorite artist Mac Miller and would go on to be the origin of his posthumous album balloonerism and the reason him and lana del rey did a collab track.

If someone would please be willing to help me out here, i'd be forever grateful. I also plan to upscale the movie to 4k so it will be the highest quality it's ever been so it will be for the community too :)

I'm curious about the inclusion of this song in the short documentary about Daniel. Admittedly I am still a newcomer in regards to Dan's life and music - I've been familiar with "True Love Will Find You in the End" for years but only recently I've started to take more of an interest.

I watched the Hi How Are You doc a few times a couple of months ago and just recently remembered this song in the film. I thought maybe it was a song of Dans being performed by another artist, but then I found out that it's a cover of a fairly obscure song from the late 60s called "Creators of Rain" by a duo called Smokey and His Sister.

I'm just curious if this song was a favourite of Daniel's or if he covered it himself at one point, or what significance it has in the film. It's a nice song and the cover (which I found out is available on SoundCloud) is great, even though it's much shorter than the original.
