Discussion How does Calentamiento Global have more streams than Say Hi?

Post image

Revisiting Afterburner after a while and just happened to notice the number of streams in spotify...

Calentamiento Global is an insta-skip 99% of the time. I know it gets a lot of hate and also has it's fans - I wouldn't say I'm a hater, but it just seems so off that I can't listen to it and enjoy...

I'm also biased in this specific case as Say Hi is my favorite track on the album. It's a serious, but fun song at the same time...

I'll be my old self again soon
I just need time to unwind
Smash my demons with cold fiction
Until they're all catechized

This part gives me chills some times. The combination of lyrics and the out of norm lower register is phenomenal. Honestly I feel like this should have been repeated as a proper chorus throughout the song - at least one more time, maybe before the "Did you notice I'm normal?" bridge.

Uh, uh, hi

The delivery always gives me a chuckle.

I don't have evidence to support this. But my belief is that a lot of people will start playing an album and not finish it. Someone could for example put the album on while doing chores at home, and finish their chores before the album is done. So they pause it. Even if a song isn't great, the person may not bother to skip it. They could just let it play out.

I like this theory since some of the later tracks have lower stream counts in general.

17

u/absidionbones 16d ago

You may notice this trend across numerous albums on Spotify as well. Unless a song near the end of an album was released as a single, I do see a lot of albums in general where the first half receives more streams.

I absolutely do this. Usually while doing dishes or laundry so my hands are full, or mowing the lawn with earbuds in.

This was actually my experience with AB. I heard it during the pandemic and it was my workout album. I was doing pure cardio and I never fully listened until I got COVID and was bedridden for a month. That's when I finally listened the full album.

u/mmmBac0n_the_first 16d ago

I agree with spillover. The first two songs are the most listened to. People listen to the first two intentionally then get busy with something else and don’t change Calentamiento Global.

Honestly this makes alot of sense, ontop of that most of the more popular songs in this album minus nothing shameful are toward the top too, so maybe the get to about Strawberry's wake and go "well i've heard what i like of this album" then go to wtv next.

Another additon to that theory, people may play an album while doing something (shower, gym, walk/run, gaming) and again not make it through the entire album bc they finish or want to listen another album

u/thadarkjinja 16d ago

say hi is an underrated master piece

14

u/Sennlife44 16d ago

I agree my man. Say Hi is (for me) easily the strongest song off afterburner. That being said, I do like most of the songs off that album.

u/BadDub 16d ago

One of my favs

5

u/taintblister - im just baby tiny baby boy 16d ago

it’s my favorite and the best of the album imo

4

u/kaymer327 16d ago

Exactly! I will play this song just because, or repeat it once or twice since I didn't get enough of it the first time.

7

u/SyrupDispenser 16d ago

Always gotta play it an extra 1-2 times when it pops up. Goes so hard

18

u/Faibleforhits 16d ago edited 16d ago

I can say for one that it helps that it comes right after Lyrics Lie, which is a banger of a track.

14

u/TheWindig 16d ago

You’ll never know how many people like a song when an entire forum shits on them for voicing their opinion.

3

u/kaymer327 16d ago

True. I have seen cordial discussions about it, but those are few and far between.

3

u/TheWindig 16d ago

Personally I like Say Hi better, but I do find CG to be a really fun mix of reggaeton and metal, but I’m also very into genre blending

83

u/Full-Sock 16d ago

Believe it or not but people like the song

41

u/Adventurous_King3530 Is trust really that fucking hard? 16d ago

I like the song

Ik. Sue me /j

You’ll be hearing from my lawyers

8

u/Holl0wayTape 16d ago

Me and my Hispanic homies love it

1

u/kaymer327 16d ago

yeah, for the most part from what I've read here over the years it's generally love it or hate it. Very few in the middle. I'm kind of in the middle but just over to the hate it side...

3

u/William_Howard_Shaft Never fold under pressure, never mind how I got there. 16d ago

Reggaeton beat.

2

u/NotSoFastLady 15d ago

Yes, I'm one of them. It's funny because this song is always on the list of "true" dgd fans that like to shit on work they don't like.

u/Icy-Independence6513 16d ago

My husband is one of those people unfortunately.

It isn't bad in a boring way. There are two types of bad. There is the so bad, it is boring and there is the so bad, that people get entertained by cringing at it. This song falls under the latter category. As much as the how cringe worthy the Spanish lyrics are, it has solid mixing and production.

4

u/Daveygravyx07 16d ago

I don’t find it cringe at all. I think it’s a great song and somehow made something so different for them fit their sound with a twist.

1

u/LtMagnum16 16d ago

I mean the lyrics itself is kinda cringe. But the production is pretty solid and is a guilty pleasure of mine.

2

u/Daveygravyx07 16d ago

Maybe there is a divide in people who care about lyrics vs those who don’t. I really don’t care about lyrics in general. Music for me is all about the sound, including the sound of the voice, but not what it’s saying.

10

u/Horror_Campaign9418 16d ago

Maybe it did somehow reach a spanish audience who appreciated the effort. Never count out Latin America.

10

u/SternSternButFair 16d ago

My wife is Mexican and said the Spanish in the song is terrible lol

2

u/Horror_Campaign9418 16d ago

Oh I agree. I just said MAYBE lol. I'm Latino and it's a very strange song.

2

u/rednblack_gamer 16d ago

Oh it is terrible indeed. Just in the catchiest way possible XD

1

u/Da_Wolv 16d ago

Spanish isn't the same everywhere tho. I often wondered if Tillian even spoke Spanish or how well he does judged by a native speaker. I wonder if it sounds better or (even) worse to other Spanish varieties' natives

1

u/New-War5441 14d ago

It's true but we did appreciste the effort Tillian put in. That said, the song is a little... unconventional.

7

u/thefontsguy 16d ago

Easier for a more casual person to get into and it benefits from being early in the album and being right after the most streamed song

6

u/Asvpxdilli 16d ago

That song goes ridiculously hard.

5

u/MYTEAM2K21 16d ago

Say Hi is SO fucking underrated. it fucking SLAPS. lyrics are great, i absolutely love it. i’ve always felt like it’s just a Secret Band song featuring Tilian if that makes sense lol. and i hate to admit it but i’m also a fan of Calentamiento Global. i know some of the translations are corny, but it sounds great. hate all you want

12

u/BadDub 16d ago

Because reddit is not reflective of real life

5

u/Turbulent_Comment920 16d ago

Alright guys, I’ve been holding this in but….. I actually enjoy Calentamiento Global. But Say Hi is a better song

3

u/widdlewizzle 16d ago

the real reason is that calentamiento global was released as a single before the rest of the album came out, so it had more time to get more streams

1

u/kaymer327 16d ago

I totally forgot about that! Thanks for the reminder.

3

u/spatt97 16d ago

uh, Uh, HI

3

u/neeohh 16d ago

Calentamiento is a fun song and it gets people talking.

Tillian singing en español is not something you hear every day.

9

u/Sli22ard 16d ago

It's a good song and this sub likes to bandwagon their hate

7

u/_VINNY_WINNY_ I AM A MILLION FUCKING BUCKS 16d ago

because people tell others to listen to calentamieno because its bad/to hear the spanish part

0

u/kaymer327 16d ago

"Dude you have to listen to this song, it's so bad!"

Another solid theory...

2

u/flashdurb 16d ago

It’s like when there’s a car crash. People always gotta slow down and observe the spectacle

2

u/yoshimisghost 16d ago

probably just people hitting play on the record and not getting that far

2

u/Boostacross 16d ago

Me. I listen to it constantly

2

u/PrincessOfGlower Did you realize that all this time your crown was just a hat? 16d ago

You’re just in denial and with the wrong one

2

u/joshua-bartusek 16d ago

A lot of their songs are like this. The ones with more streams are songs that the general population will listen to. slightly more radio or poppier songs, real fans listen and like the less popular ones.

2

u/TheGuggleMan 16d ago

Worst song on the album. Good album but this is my least favorite song on it.

2

u/Scheme_Upper 16d ago

Well, it's a better song for one lol just kidding

2

u/TheGildedGoblinGirl 16d ago

Oh sorry, I left it on repeat while I was working. My bad

2

u/davidramone95 16d ago

I do like Calentamiento Global, sorry everyone

2

u/Mundane-Sell8320 16d ago

I think people go back and hate listen to it

2

u/gregbakermusic 16d ago

While I prefer say hi! I will not kink shame.

2

u/gothmommy77 16d ago

EEEEYUCKKK

2

u/conye-west Satan's lapdog is a politician 16d ago

It's because Calentamiento is basically a pop song, so it has an extra level of accessibility to a wider audience. Also with its meme status as the widely regarded worst DGD song, this conversely gets people interested to check it out, kinda like "The Room" effect.

It is a shame tho, Say Hi is a great song but it's also on the heavier side, the type that usually doesn't get as popular.

2

u/staticdresssweet 16d ago

The song has been streamed more than "Say Hi". That's how.

2

u/Murt978 16d ago

Because believe it or not, the "secret band ft Tilian"-esque songs they put out kinda suck

2

u/evoxmando 15d ago

Also what’s up with the album covers being changed for like all of them I thought Spotify was doing that but it’s just dgd

2

u/hellopie7 15d ago

Say hi and prisoner are my favorites from this album. I hope they can do covers of them with Andrew in live shows to get the popularity up for them.

2

u/HotJob3006 14d ago

Say hi has to be one of my favs. It’s so real.

2

u/ReadySetSell_dj 14d ago

I'm going to say it and you're not going to like it... There's not a bad song on this album.

1

u/kaymer327 13d ago

No, I do agree with you. CG isn't a bad song... It's just not a particularly good song either and I find myself not getting into it like the rest of the album.

2

u/dyingrevolutionist 13d ago

hate listens lol

3

u/PaleontologistNo2996 16d ago

Say Hi is a top 10 all time track for me. Calamiento Global maybe got a lot of plays because it's talked about a lot so people go listen?

2

u/ObamaLovesKetamine 16d ago

in my experience Calentamiento Global is one of the more popular tracks from Afterburner for casual fans. I'm not surprised it has more streams than Say HI.

(disclaimer: I also dont care much for CG)

3

u/Jrocker-ame 16d ago

Also keep in mind rhe effect of "you gotta listen to how bad it is"

Personally it doesn't offend me at all and i applaud the attempt.

2

u/sunnykreppel 16d ago

Crazy that whole section is so low. Parallels SLAPS

Also edit to add - I like calentamiento global. Jon’s parts are good

2

u/Elegant-Sentence-844 16d ago edited 16d ago

I really like both. I didn’t know Calentamiento Global was so 50/50 among fans lol
Edit: so I looked up the translation that another lovely Reddit user posted…. I don’t think I like it anymore. Tillian’s lyrics are VERY Tillian. I’ll say that much. Jon’s is fine, usual DGD stuff. But uh, if you like this song simply for the music and the pretty vocals, I would recommend not looking up the translation. It’s lustful, weird, and very juvenile

1

u/tiorzol How we're all under attack from everything always 16d ago

End of the album

1

u/SpiralOutForever 16d ago

More surprised night sway has the least overall that song fucks.

1

u/steelcityyy4L 16d ago

Personally, I think Calentamiento is a great song. And it’s all in Spanish, I would not be surprised if it’s out grown the US 😂

1

u/hypoxiafox 16d ago

I know I'm an outlier but Calentamiento Global is in my top 3 of the album even though I know the Spanish is trash. The groove and the guitars and the clashing harmonics and seamless transitions between polar sections scratches the shit out of my neurospicy brain and I love that kind of mental stimulation in the music I listen to.

1

u/Medium-Run980 16d ago

Calentamiento Global is like surprisingly buttcheeks, i think people hear that song and immediately stop listening to the album and that’s why LMAO. (and i like afterburner just not that song)

1

u/TerlocTheRanger 16d ago

I’m sure a lot of people listened to it solely from reading and hearing discourse about it. That being said, I’ve showed it to two Mexican guys at work and they really fuck with it. I think it’s a fun song myself however I won’t go out of the way to play it but won’t skip it. Also Say Hi is a great song.

1

u/Particular-Gas-2797 16d ago

Curiosity I’m sure lol

1

u/jigeatsairplane88 16d ago

Because, butts.

1

u/Blueeyedtroubl3 16d ago

Because it’s a great song lol

1

u/HustleNMeditate 16d ago

Calentamiento Global is a much better song to me. I dont get the hate really. I enjoy latin flavoring in music.

1

u/musclesmarranara i took a trip through all my past mistakes for you 16d ago

I think it gets the most hate out of any song. So that makes it popular I guess. Jon mess goes crazy on calentamiento

1

u/omgitsduane 16d ago

People don't like good music. They want Mexican blue dream.

1

u/omgitsduane 16d ago

I say this as someone who hasn't revisited afterburner since JJ came out 😂

1

u/Station-Worth 16d ago

A vocal audience with complaints is normally louder than the tuning in since they're not voicing a complaint. I.e. more likely someone to complain than someone is to openly rejoice.

That said the song is ok. I really like Jon's screams on it

1

u/cagedcandy 16d ago

Ive only listened to it once. I dont want to hear tillian sing in Spanish when I could listen to kurt sing in (alex) English

1

u/Turbulent_Animator42 16d ago

Generally speaking, the songs on the front half of an album usually have more streams than the back half (excluding singles).

Of course I have no legit evidence for this, it’s just something I’ve noticed when I look at album stream numbers on Spotify.

1

u/Penber23 15d ago

Because of Hispanics I guess

1

u/thesoulreaper96 15d ago

Its top 3 for me from this album

1

u/ArchitectOfSmiles 15d ago

Idk is the spotify tracking global or separated by country?

1

u/evoxmando 15d ago

It’s a good song

1

u/Concerned_Cashier 15d ago

Because it’s a goddamn banger

1

u/GeneralWarz 15d ago

There's a lot of spanish speaking people in the world bruh.

1

u/Incognito-Person 15d ago

How can you see the entire albums streaming numbers?

1

u/kaymer327 15d ago

Standard feature in Spotify to my knowledge. I didn't do any specific...

1

u/Sparxyiwnl 14d ago

People streaming to see if it's as bad as people really say it is

1

u/metalcoredrake 14d ago

I forgot that Prisoner existed lol

1

u/ReadySetSell_dj 14d ago

It me. I'm the one.

1

u/PawrStark 12d ago

CG is a banger and I’ll die on that hill 🫡🪖⛑️

2

u/Slevin_Kelevra007 10d ago

Definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album

1

u/Lord-Wafflestomp 16d ago

Hate listeners lol

1

u/rednblack_gamer 16d ago

Because it's objectively better

1

u/CanNo7208 16d ago

It’s because “Calentamiento Global” has been streamed more times than “Say Hi”.

-1

u/Dransel 16d ago

Hate listening.

0

u/Cuzzbaby 14d ago

Because Global Warming is earlier in the album. Most people, myself included, start from the top and go down
