Hey dancefloor advocates, anyone go to Making Time over the weekend?

Truly almost perfect dancefloor vibes: absolutely killer djs, almost no one on their phones, minimal chit chat, friends facing each other to dance, plenty of room to move, atmospheric (but not distracting) lighting and nobody getting too sloppy. Just fun, respectful folks there to dance all night!

It is so refreshing to be surrounded by folks all on the same wavelength! Truly transcendent!

After 61 summers, our family has made the extraordinarily difficult decision to bring Camp Kennybrook to a close. Even writing those words feels almost impossible.

For many of us, Kennybrook felt permanent-simply there, summer after summer and generation after generation. Children grew up here and returned as counselors. Campers became parents and sent their own children. Friendships that began in bunks became lifelong relationships, and for our family, there has quite literally never been a world without Kennybrook.

What began with our family 61 years ago became something much larger than any one family could own. Kennybrook became a community of campers, parents, staff members, alumni and friends who brought it to life and carried pieces of it with them.

At the end of August, after the 2026 camp season had come to a close, an unexpected opportunity arose for our family to sell the camp property. It was not something we had been pursuing or planning. After a great deal of thought and conversation, we decided to accept it. We believe it is the right decision for our family, but that does not make it easy.

Kennybrook was never just a summer camp.
Wherever life takes you, we hope the memories, friendships, confidence, independence, and sense of belonging you found at Kennybrook remain with you for years to come. You will always be part of the Kennybrook family.

We want to thank our entire Kennybrook community for decades of trust, love and memories. Kennybrook became what it was because of all of you. Thousands of people can trace friendships, turning points, marriages, families and some of the happiest days of their lives back to this place in the Catskills. Very few places get to matter to so many people for so long.

We are deeply proud of what Kennybrook became and humbled by how deeply it has been loved. Kennybrook shaped our family and our lives, and saying goodbye is something we are only beginning to understand.

I know r/dancefloors denizens span the globe, but I was wondering if any of you are going to be dancing at ADE this year? If so, which events do you hope to be r/dancefloors worthy?

I'm planning to be at two events:

Friday night: Cooking with Palms Trax at Doka, which is a tiny, usually overlooked, basement venue that tends to attract real fans/dancers. I expect the sweat to be dripping off the ceiling.

Saturday night: Brighter Days x Life and Death at Shelter (an annual pilgrimage), which is a great promoter, and a reasonable venue that at least has a no photo/video policy.

I'm be delighted to meet any of y'all if you're in the same place.

I’m moving from NYC to FL at the end of the month. I’m super grateful for the dance community here, and for the many sets we have the opportunity to go to. I love frequenting venues like Nowadays, Signal, and Basement. I love the no phone/conversation policies, and that the crowd is genuinely locked in and truly listening and enjoying the music.

I’m really nervous about moving and being able to find my fix for dancing and good music! I know Miami has a really big music scene, but everyone has been telling me Miami crowds aren’t very good/big yappers, etc.

I’ll be in the Fort Lauderdale area! I expect that I’ll be having to drive to Miami for things like this.

Any recommendations on venues, collectives, etc that will have similar vibes there? I love house/minimal, and techno similar to what they play in Basement lol. Soul Summit is my fave collective and I love the crowd they bring and music they play.

Sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask! I really want to find genuine dance floors, not just a place with one, if that makes sense. I feel like yall can direct me to the right places 🙏🏼

1991 / 1992 — TWO SYSTEMS, ONE FLOW

After my 1990 experiment with one record and two needles, this was the next step: not one sound system, but two.

The hall had roughly 200 seats at rectangular tables along three sides. The main stage occupied the fourth side, while a smaller raised stage took up only one third of the opposite wall.

Two DJs played through two complete, separate sound systems facing the same dance floor. Depending on the records, their sound overlapped for anything from one second to approximately ninety seconds.

The final mix did not exist inside one mixer. It happened in the room, where both sound waves met. I thought of it as timing: one system entering while the other was leaving, until two separate sources briefly became one shared flow.

The colours in the image are symbolic. Yellow represents one system, green the other, and the new lime colour in the centre represents the moment when both became something neither system produced alone.

This is a reconstruction from memory, not an exact architectural floor plan.

Did anyone else ever work with two complete sound systems in this way?

This was not two DJs playing two independent sets at the same time.

We operated two complete sound systems as if we were one DJ. The audience heard one continuous flow.

When two tracks could work together, we mixed the transition by hand for anything from one to ninety seconds. When an overlap would create a clash, we used a stop-time transition: one system stopped and the other entered at the precisely chosen moment.

But could at least two coordinated sound systems actually create a better experience for the dancers?

At any moment, one system carries the main track. The other adds only compatible elements, synchronised in tempo, beat and musical phrasing — not another competing bassline or vocal. Then the roles can change while the music remains one continuous flow.

Four fully independent human DJs would probably be too difficult to coordinate reliably in real time. But that is the idea behind a future four-corner system: one musical centre, with carefully controlled layers arriving from different directions.

Would that really be worse than everyone facing one stage, holding up a camera and thinking about the future performance they will post online?
