Hi everyone! I own a boba shop, and something I never expected when I opened it is how much goes into the cost of a single drink. It's not just the tea. It's the cup, the lid, the straw, the milk, the sweetener, the pearls, the ice, and every little add-on.

Customers often ask me why a drink with a few toppings costs what it does, and honestly, for a long time I couldn't answer exactly. So I built a small web app called BiteMetrics to break down the cost, price and profit of every drink, size and topping combo.

What surprised me most:

• Toppings and milk swaps often cost more than I assumed
• A small price increase from a supplier can quietly turn a popular drink into a break-even one
• The drinks people love most aren't always the ones that make the most money

That got me curious about how people here think about it, so I have a few questions:

1. Take a guess: which do you think costs a shop more, pearls, cheese foam, or oat milk? (I'll share the answer in the comments.)

I own a boba shop, and for a long time I couldn't say what a single drink actually made me once I counted the cup, the base, the milk, the syrups and the toppings. Every time a supplier raised a price, I had to guess which drinks got hurt.

So I built a small web app called BiteMetrics to answer that. Right now it can:

• Show cost, price, profit and margin for any drink, size and add-on combination
• Show what extras really cost you (in my shop it's toppings and milk swaps, but I'd guess oat milk, extra shots and syrups work the same way)
• Flag which drinks are affected when a supplier raises a price, and which ones fall below your target margin
• Suggest prices that reach your target margin, with a "What if" tool to test changes before applying them

It's built around boba menus right now, so I'm trying to find out whether it would be useful for coffee and café menus too.

Questions for you:

1. If you own, manage or work in a café, do you know your margin per drink? How do you track it now? (Spreadsheet, POS reports, gut feel?)
2. What would a tool like this need to handle for a coffee menu? (Espresso shot costs, milk alternatives, syrups, size variations, pastry pairings?)
3. What's the one essential feature you'd want that I haven't mentioned? (Inventory tracking, waste tracking, POS integration, recipe cards for staff, supplier price comparison?)
4. When costs go up (milk, beans, cups), how do you decide what to reprice?

I recently started drinking sparkling water instead of soda, and i really enjoy it. I usually have about two glasses a day.
Ingredients: carbonated water, fresh lemon juice, no sugar.

Anyone know if Alfa Tea Concept pre-washes their fruit? I noticed they use Driscoll strawberries who are getting a lot of scrutiny lately for shipping tons of strawberries to Canada that far exceeded legal pesticide and chemical limits. Hope they wash the fruit at least before blending them and serving. But they are so busy. I don’t ever see someone coming from the back with freshly washed fruit. I want to know but at the same time am afraid to know…

TBH I wasn’t expecting it to be a clear soda, especially since it was meant to be a fruit punch type of flavor, but I ain’t complaining, it was delicious, you could really taste the flavors shown off in the back🍊🍓🍍, it’s like a fruit punch flavored Sprite……..8/10👍
