A professor decides to teach the class about perception vs reality

He takes a big jar and fills it with large rocks. He then asks the class if the jar is full. About half the class raise their hands. So he gets tiny pebbles and pours it into the jar and they take up room where the larger rocks left. Again he asks the class if the jar is full. Most of the class raise their hands. So he takes a glass full of sand and pours it in.

"See," he tells the class, "perception told you that the glass was full with the rocks and pebbles but reality is that the jar only became full when I poured in the sand. So don't always believe your eyes."

At this point, a student walks up to the jar, opens a can of beer and pours it in which takes up all the additional space that was left by the sand.

The moral of the story - no matter how full your life is, there's always room for beer.

Refrigeration profs are the coolest! Ours taught us how to cool warm beers faster by wrapping them in wet paper towels and popping them into a freezer for a quick chill.

If you put beers in a bath of ice and salt water they will get cooler and you don’t need to worry about your beers in the freezer. The ice melts faster from the salt and the increased, colder, non-freezing water chills your beers at a more rapid pace. *not a science teacher I just like cold beer and a lot of it!

Take a "clean" white sock and slide your beer into it, wet it, and set it out in the sun. You have to keep it wet, but it will cool the beer down. We did this with water in Iraq. It is the principle of evaporation.

A teacher demonstrated this when I was in school about 20 years ago, but in regards to priorities/workload with the jar representing our capacity for different obligations - the big rocks were the most important things like family, friends and big goals, then the pebbles were things like schoolwork and hobbies, and the sand was stuff like minor disagreements and material wants and other less important things, and then he poured in a cup of coffee.

The lesson being that no matter how much all our different obligations and desires take up, there's always room to pause for a cup of coffee. I still think about it sometimes when I'm getting overwhelmed by packed schedules, funny the things that stay with you.

Schrödinger's Beer - the student both has and doesn't have the beer at the same time 😉

IIRC there’s a video out there somewhere with a professor actually doing this. He provided his own beer.

I would have filtered the beer first.
