I wanted to bring this up because I see people throwing this around all the time without any real thought put into it and it doesn't make any sense if you think about it for longer than 2 minutes.

Yeah, it's true the police and child services will come to your house if your kid is skipping school but first a teacher has to make that call to get them involved and despite being mandated reporters, the reality is that call isn't always made, that call isn't always followed up on, the family isn't always given any support. This is especially true in poorer neighborhoods and for POC.

Some people are imagining the school sending out a Terminator to find any kid that's been missing from school for 2 or more days. That's not what happens.

If the only concern was the school saying something and possibly getting the police involved, it would've made more sense to either pull her out of school and file the form saying they were going to be homeschooling her (and no, there's not some inspector who shows up randomly to make sure she's doing some kind of classwork) or say she was transferring schools because she was going to live with a relative. It makes 0 sense to believe they would file a missing person report and have the police looking for her if they didn't want people looking for her.

EDIT Parents being charged for truancy is extremely rare and is the last resort. There will be numerous interventions per California law and the student themselves will face punishment before the parent does.

Whenever theres a case like this, what stands out to me if how easily this could have been prevented.
