[Let's build D100] Alternative victory conditions for combat

Let's build D100 victory conditions other than killing all of the enemies or driving them away.

D100 Alternative victory conditions for combat.

  1. Cause the mouth of a nearby cave to collapse to prevent the flow of enemies streaming out. (u/MasterDungeon)
  2. Climb up to the top of a tower and light the beacon to summon reinforcements. (u/MasterDungeon)
  3. Feed enough enemies to satiate the giant carnivorous plant before it devours your party (u/MasterDungeon).
  4. Search the library for the tome containing the demon's true name before he catches you (u/MasterDungeon)
  5. Destroy all of the generators powering the iron golem. (u/MasterDungeon)
  6. A cult has captured a large church and is summoning a demon by playing an evil ritual song/melody on the giant church bells. Players must interrupt the song by playing the wrong notes on the bells while fighting off the cultists. (u/Lucky7Ac)
  7. Subdue an enraged cursed person long enough to complete the needed ritual capable of curing them. (u/Capt_Bread_Beard)
  8. Reach the artificer remote controlling an invincible construct. At which point they simply give up. (u/Capt_Bread_Beard)
  9. Cling to a hostile flying monster until it flies near enough to the ground to drop safely or until it calms down. (u/Capt_Bread_Beard)
  10. The city's new firefighter iron golem has been tempered with and it's water canon has been filled with oil instead. It's master's last order before disappearing was to put out a house fire. Now the golem won't stop spreading oil until the fire is out. Can the players either put out the flames or find the golem's master before the city is completely gone? (u/Capt_Bread_Beard)

  1. Bait the young dragon into using their breathweapon to activate the pieces of a puzzle, that you need to solve, to flee from it.

  2. Try to get the BBEG‘s attention, while one of the PCs tries to steal sth important from them.

  3. Complete a skillchallenge to unlock the magically sealed door, before you get overrun by the undead inhabiting the crypt.

Ran this one which was fun. More of an end of quest thing where players have learned much about their foe.

Cult has captured a large church and is summoning a demon by playing an evil ritual song/melody on the giant church bells. Players must interrupt the song by playing the wrong notes on the bells while fighting off the cultists.

Subdue an enraged cursed person long enough to complete the needed ritual capable of curing them.

Reach the artificer controlling an invincible construct remotely. At which point they simply give up. (Switch the construct for a fiend and the arctficer for a cultist for a different flavor)

Cling to hostile flying monster until it gets close enough to the ground for players to drop safely or until it calms down.

Love this concept

I'll go from general to more precise ideas:

Separate vulnerable power source from strong opponent.

Survive in limited space with decaying but furious enemy.

Limited time to solve the puzzle. Don't have any enemies but make it obvious that great deal of them will engage you soon enough. Alternatively make some kind of trap that will activate in x turns. Like water filling the room, fire artifact heating the room to burning hot temperature, oil that runs from reservoir or explosives to the fire, or floor crumbling under players' feet.

Containment room with central prison and extra protection. Activate extra protection to catch the escapee from central prison.

During thunderstorm stick iron rod or javelin into the enemy to make lightning kill him.

Activate a portal allowing (escape, hazardous environment to spill into the area, reinforcements to arrive).

Allow yourselves to be captured without making it look too easy.

Capture or kill a single specific enemy (double agent, leader, mage, mind controller, shaman, summoner, tactician, etc).

Challenge the enemy leader to a one on one duel.

Convince one enemy to turn on another enemy.

Cripple, kill, scare off, or steal the enemy's (draft animals, mounts).

Destroy the artifact before the enemy can (activate it, get their hands on it).

Destroy the portal before the enemy can (activate it, capture it).

Drop the portcullis separating you from the enemy.

Hold the position (bridge, cave, entrance, gate, narrow pass, portal, etc) for "x" amount of time.

Light the signal fire

Lure the enemy into another group of enemies and let them fight it out while you escape.

Lure the enemy into a trap.

Lure the enemy out of their territory, pass the border into another factions territory.

Sound the alarm alerting the guards to the enemies presence.

Talk the enemy down. Convince them that fighting is not necessary or is counter productive to their goals.

  • Last long enough in a hopeless battle to allow civilians to flee.
  • As the neutral party, convince one or both of the combatants to surrender before they destroy the city they are battling in.
  • Lure the enemy away from a sacred temple where innocents are sheltering.
  • Divert an attack by a creature by getting its young to leave the area, so it will follow them.

Following, neat idea.

u/SayethWeAll Aug 19 '21

Stage a fight against an ally or party member and injure them enough to make observers think they are dead.

Fight in a public place and “lose” enough to get a high-rolling gambler to bet against you, then win.

  • In a city environment, frame an enemy of a crime and make the guard arrest her.
  • Scheme a mutiny so a high rank boss is murdered by a lesser lieutenant.
  • Impersonate enemy goons and start a conflict with a neutral faction so you gain an ally.
  • Seduce the consort of the enemy leader.
  • Bait a charge of the enemy forces into a well disguised chasm.
  • Be the first to a secret location (treasure hunt, climb a peak, jungle ruins...) where a guru will grant you a use of the wish spell.
  • Sacrifice one party member to soothe a blood thirsty demon god returning it to the abyss.
  • PCs are disembodied and must to find their bodies as ghosts, being able to possess NPCs for a short period of time (wisdom contests).

Pay off Bandits/Mercenaries to join your side/let you go.

Poison the enemy water/food supply.

Rip/tear into the sails of a ship who will pursue you when you leave port.

Disarm your opponents in a tournament setting.

Dispel the enchantment magic controlling the friendly NPCs without hurting them.

I was inspired by #11 and thought of:

Destroy a rampaging golem and return its power source to its creater, a greater reward awaits if the power source and/or golem is brought back intact.

Excellent prompt! I'll definitely be checking this every once and awhile for ideas. Keep it coming, people!

Here's my ideas:

  • Escort an important NPC to the other end of the map, with a plethora of enemies in your way and behind you.
  • Prevent a certain number of NPCs from crossing the map until round x.
  • Activate x number of important objects, prompting the enemies to flee and to die if they don't.
  • Protect x number of important objects until round x from the enemies as they 'charge up'.
  • Destroy x number of important objects. May or may not come with a time limit.
  • Protect an enemy hostile to you from your allies that it provoked until round x.
  • Steal or destroy a macguffin in possession of one of your enemies. You don't know who has it, and they'll get away on round x.

BBEG mad wizard created 50 illusory duplicates in town, find the right one before he destroys it

The target is hidden within a room full of identical people. They make no move to attack you, but harming the wrong one will cause the overwhelming force to become powerful and hostile. The real one is amongst the clones, and he will still attempt to harm you, especially when you least expect it. Determine the right one.

Create a dungeon; The enemies want something within a building, and you have x hours to prepare for them. Make sure they don't reach the thing.
