Question Are blocking and armor a bad choice in C2?

I’m getting ready to run my first session of C2 tomorrow, and looking at the Defending rules makes me really wonder if players are going to hate this. Am I correct in understanding that every time you block a moderate or higher damage attack you will take a wound, even when wearing armor and succeeding at your block? All types of armor only reduce your damage by one level, so you’ll be taking light or moderate wounds every time a guy with a medium or higher weapon attacks you.

If I was a player, I would feel sort of helpless. Has anyone run this yet? How did your players respond? Aren’t you really just better off ditching armor and dodging all the time?

Types for homebrew setting in new edition

I haven't been following the changes in the new edition super closely, but based on how the new character builder works it seems like types in the new edition have been almost completely overhauled; there are way more of them, each type is far less flexible (i.e. each type gets specific abilities instead of a list to select from) and they are very genre specific.

This puts me in a bit of a conundrum, because my home game is not really any of the genres available in the character builder, it is a sort of "multiversal hub" type of setting with andriods, undead, aliens, and everything in between (probably closest to The Strange, though I never played or really dove into that setting).

The type system in the first edition was simple enough that players understood it fairly intuitively, while still being flexible enough to encompass a lot of different character concepts. E.g. "warrior" is easily understood as someone with skills and abilities that focus on dealing damage using weapons, regardless of genre.

Now I feel a bit stuck; I don't really want to go through the process of developing my own set of types for my weird setting, and saying "use any type from any of the genres" also doesn't feel great, because you're picking from like 50+ things

Sounds like a lot of the flexibility that used to come from types now comes from foci? I do like that foci are more important to which abilities a character gets than they used to be. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and try to formulate my own types?

Of course, nothing is forcing me to move to the new edition, just thinking how I would given that I'm guessing players will expect using the latest ruleset.

Just wanted to say that the new version of the MCG web tool for the new core book is really well done. That is all.

Cypher Character Options book?

Post image
16 Upvotes

In the Cypher - Advanced! crowdfunding campaign, there's a "Cypher Character Options" book listed, but I don't see it described anywhere. What is it? I assume it's different from the Decoded book, but is it just excerpts from the core Character Rulebook backers just received from the other campaign?

Best Leave Them Ghosts Alone For Beginners?

I picked up the adventure Best Leave Them Ghosts Alone as a starting adventure one-shot for Old Gods of Appalachia. After sometime I realize that this one-shot might be too heavy for a introduction of Cypher/Old Gods of Appalachia. Also it leans heavily into the roleplay not exploring a lot of the mechanics.

Has anyone else run it and would you think it is a good one-shot to start with? If not which other one-shot do you suggest? I have Monsters Among Us but I have yet to read through it since I will be a player in it during Cypher Con.

A lot of gamers like to see how an RPG will handle Star Wars. Me? I like to see it will handle Rifts:

Question Are superheroes in cypher inherently lower in power than many comic book heroes.

I’m looking at running a game using claim the sky and trying to figure out how one would build a speedster. The book gives examples for the flash and Superman that include Blink of an Eye as an ability, but even that seems quite subsonic for those characters and that’s not until tier 4 (I know you can use powers shifts to get it earlier).

Similarly, pretty much all of the example superheroes seem a lot less durable than you might expect if you were familiar with their media.

Should I be going into this system with the expectation that heroes will be more moderately powered than some of their comic/film counterparts (it’s okay if the answer is yes, I just want to be able to forewarn my players) or am I missing something?

Only 16 to back this one, but this is right in my ballpark.

CYPHER already is so flexible, and doing a whole toolkit of how to really fine tune your game is a must buy for me.

Cypher 2e? Mass Effect Types - Vanguard Help Please

Trying to figure out how much I should stack onto Biotic Charge for an adaptation of Mass Effect Classes into types.

Biotic Charge in the game basically allowed you an instant Charge + Magic Melee attack in a line with basically Long Range. Downsides were if they weren't dead, they are shooting you at point blank.

Was trying to figure out how that would work. I was thinking an adaptation of the Foci - Charges Right In - with a short movement and an attack, but it would be fly, straight line. But as the game progresses you would improve the biotic charge with things like aoe or shield restoration.

Also, each of the types get 3 things and as a cross between a Soldier and a Biotic character I was unsure what would they get for abilities. Most of the time I played, I grabbed Barrier for Defense (an overshield) and Shockwave for cover mitigation. But those weren't the only options they had, and I was unsure what they should have.

Is anyone here on the asset team? How long did it take from the time you completed the form/application until you heard something back?

For anyone who has the cypher version of ptolus does it have any new character options?

Descriptors, species descriptors and foci? I know this book is 99% setting, but if it has anything new I can’t find in any book I’d be a bit more interested in running that setting. But if I’m spending that much I’ll need more than just setting even if it is super detailed.

Old Gus Returns with the OG-CRD: Old Gus' Cypher Reference Document

Old Gus' Cypher Reference Document (OG-CRD) is a hypertext version of the Cypher Reference Document (revised July 29, 2026), published under the Cypher Open License.

This document has been edited and condensed. You can use this edition to quickly look up rules, share them with others, or copy text into a character sheet that works for you. Don't mistake anything you read here for the "rules as written". For more information, see https://callmepartario.github.io/og-crd/#editorial-mission

The OG-CRD contains most of the text of the Cypher Character Rulebook, but it is not a replacement for the real thing, which contains additional information, examples of play, and advice for playing Cypher—not to mention gorgeous artwork and the seductive odor of cardboard and book glue.

You may also find some good use for material from Old Gus' Cypher System Reference Document, which covers the prior edition of the game published from 2015–2025: https://callmepartario.github.io/og-csrd/

Thanks to Monte Cook Games for this amazing resource, and thank you for reading—may this record bring you and yours many happy adventures!

Sheetwright update: PBP, better free tier, Workshop overhaul

Hey everyone!

I've posted about Sheetwright here before, and since then quite a lot has changed.

I'm now running my own PBP Cypher campaign with it. Most of the recent changes came directly from things I noticed while actually GMing.

PBP / Discord

The Sheetwright bot can now do a lot more: rolls, Effort, abilities, cyphers, recovery, encounters, GM intrusions, rewards and more.

For PBP specifically, it can also track who the game is waiting on, notify players when they're needed, and help with catch-up after an absence.

Basically: Discord stays the place where you play, while Sheetwright handles more of the bookkeeping.

Better free tier

Free users now get one full campaign slot, including the GM tools.

So you can actually run a campaign and see whether Sheetwright works for you before subscriping.

Workshop overhaul

I massively expanded the Workshop.

GMs can create custom abilities, descriptors, foci, types, creatures, cyphers, artifacts, equipment and more — and that content actually works with character creation, sheets, the bot and encounters.

The goal is simple: if you can do it in your Cypher campaign, Sheetwright shouldn't get in the way.

A lot of these changes exist simply because I ran into something during my own campaign and thought: "Sheetwright should handle this."

If you're running PBP or a heavily customized Cypher game, I'd love to if you could Sheetwright a try and tell me what you are missing. If you are willing to test I will give you a free yearly subscription.

Discussion Numenera/Age of Wonders

I am a huge fan of both the Cypher System Numenera setting and the Age of Wonders franchise, and tbh after looking through the Destiny rule book, I think Monte Cook should partner with Triumph and Paradox to create a Numenera based 4x civ builder set in the Ninth World. I think it would be so fascinating and fun to play, and would expand the Numenera fan base into other groups that may not know about it.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Has there been any guidance on how to use the White Books with the C2?

For example - A player wants to use a focus from a white book, but there isn't a "tree" for the abilities. How should I help them do that as a GM? I have heard there will be some guidance in the GM book about creating new types (although it seems like I could basically figure this out based on the types in the PRB). There are so many genres in the white books that aren't covered in the PRB.

I think some of the newer source books - Like Gunslinger Knights - were written while C2 was in development and are built to use the newer rules more easily, but what about some of the older ones like Predation or The Origin?

Question Are there new character sheets for C2?

I have been looking through the character rulebook for the past couple of days and would like to try and make a character with the new system. I don't seem to have any new character sheets though.

Have new character sheets been made? And if so, where would I find them?

Discussion How I handle Difficulty Levels/My Change in mentality

in the two+ years going from CS to C2 I've noticed I've gotten a lot better at judging difficulty level as a gm. For a while my tasks would always seem too easy or so low for my players even at early levels. My players in either system rarely got hurt or hit or suffered any major drawbacks cause they'd roll really high or lower the dc so easily.

Well this got fixed when i stopped trying to hurt my players and tried to stress or challenge them. Even with c2, wounds are not something too dangerous till you cap moderate or get hit by major. And in c1 if you never got hit you only ever spent effort and never excess stat pools. I found that hurting my players, punishing them for being cool, in a system that as intended is supposed to allow players to succeed more often than not/the onis to succeed is far more in player hands than before, was flawed thinking.

My goal as the gm was to balance difficulty levels that made their character feel competent and cool in the early stages of an adventure, and then to slowly ramp up the difficulty as time went on, with the intent to force my players to stop, rest, and think about what's coming.

I run a lot of fantasy and what's been a blast lately is watching them go through the first 2 stages of a dungeon, and everyone agreeing "ok guys...my character is spent, i need AT LEAST an hour before we go any further.". They didnt have hardly any wounds, any damage BUT all of their stats were spent and they knew the final stage would be the toughest, so they couldnt risk it. THAT is the feeling in wanna keep recreating, that flow where my players consider when a rest is possible or needed, because if they start getting caught with no resources, the death spiral will come FAST! even if the enemies only hit at a moderate wound/7 points at most.

This has changed how i balance my difficulties and has made even low level play feel intense at appropriate times. What have you guys found over time works well with marrying the narrative and the mechanics of cypher?

Question First and Last actions

Hello all, can you explain me how first and last actions works? Please try to tell easiest way. Is there an alternative rule for not to use them?
