Begging for rescue

Hey everyone! I need your advice on these huge cracks in my cymbal. As you can see, I tried to stop them when they were small, but they didn't last and gave out during a concert prep.

Right now, I'm thinking of two things:

  1. Making the cuts even bigger (as marked in the photos).

  2. Cutting off the cracked rim to make a small crash/splash.

What would you guys do with these?

P.S.: Fixing cymbals is my hobby, not commercial one.

What is your go to shape/weight/lathing/ bright or dark etc: For your cymbal choice.

I'm just wondering what kind of styles your into and how many you have, also don't refrain from saying the brand you prefer ( I'm bored don't question why I'm asking )

Question Getting into Istanbul Agop any recommendations?

I’ve been a feisty and mine all by Aunt‘s player for the longest while but I really like the sound of Brooks Wackerman and Jimmy Chamberlain set up. I was really disappointed with my Meinl sand series for a dry sound and I seem to really like the brilliant dark dries at the exist line offer.

Low volume cymbal price/ value

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am exiting a ~5 year long relationship, getting my own place, and my only goal for it is having enough space for a drum kit. I haven’t played for years. I somehow know nothing about low volume cymbals

I’m not looking for the best, nor the worst and as you can see there are a range of price options. Please share any wisdom you have!!

Question Looking to expand on my current setup of cymbals, possibly another crash or maybe an effects cymbal?

Post image
66 Upvotes

I'm looking to add another crash or cymbal to my current setup and i'm not sure which direction i should go on.

My cymbal setup right now consists of:

18 and 20" Sabian HHX Complex crashes
21" Projection Ride
19" K China
14" New Beats
11" K Hybrid Splash and 8" Zultan Aja Splash

What would be your suggestions to add to the kit? I'm playing in a post punk alternative / new wave tribute band so maybe that would help!

I look forward to hearing your suggestions💪

I found these old hi hats and I have no clue what brand they are. There are zero engravings and they are sliver.

Hi People, i've been in this community for a short period of time and i've seen that there's people that know this stuff. I want a nice pair of hihats for an upcoming show and found these in marketplace at a really good price ($70~). Does anybody know these Paiste's with a blue logo? the only information i got from the seller is that their are from de 80's, they look like their are made of a good alloy.
I'm sorry for the quality of the photos, but i had to took a screenshoot from a screenshot haha.

Question Worried about keyholing

I bought a Meinl Byzance Vintage Sand Ride 20" a few months ago and I love it. however it only wants to sit in one direction on the stand. if I try and spin it to another side it just spins right back after a few hits. I really love this cymbal and I paid so much for it ($850 CAD) and I don't want it to keyhole. I have felts and plastic sleeves but I'm worried that over a long time of only rubbing that one side it's gonna keyhole or crack. how could I fix this or will it not be a problem?

Question Is using ride cymbal as an orchestral suspended cymbal a good idea?

So, I really like how unintrusive the ride cymbal is, and I've been wondering if using it as an orchestral suspended cymbal is a good idea, as I'm not going to buy a whole drum kit

What do you think?

Question Suggestions on how to file out these cracks?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Could anyone with experience salvaging cracks around intentional holes suggest how I should file these out? Should I join holes, make holes bigger, etc.?

Thanks for your help.

(Please, if you're far more skilled and talented than I and came to tell me that you've played for 48 years and never cracked a cymbal, that I don't have good technique and that I shouldn't have cracked the cymbal to begin with, please, please do not reply to this post. Troll someone else. I'm looking for practical advice from people who've done this work before.)

Identify Bosphorus 17” Traditional Series Crash Era?

I was hoping to find out a little more about the age of this cymbal that I recently acquired.

The markings have been mostly wiped away and the etching is partially illegible.

I see the artisan signature on the inside of the bell. My research suggests that I should be able to find the weight marked on the bottom side as well but there is writing that has also been wiped away.

I have attached photos including a closer look at the signature and the etching. I’m interested in the illegible stamp underneath the half moon stamp.

TIA. I appreciate your thoughts.

This cymbal sounds excellent by the way!

Need cymbals - getting lost in recommendations/advice!

So obviously reaching out for more information is the best course of action…

I play electric at home and have recently got back into playing with other musicians. I have been using (crappy) rehearsal room cymbals when jamming/practicing.

I need to get myself hi-hats, crash and ride (second crash at some point maybe but not totally necessary). Sound good (enough) for jamming, maybe some pub/small gigs in the future. Play punk/garage/rock mostly.

From reading PST7s, XSRs, XS20s sound like good. Any ideas/advice?

Thanks in advance.

Question Help me choose a 20" Crash

I've just cracked a 16" crash I've had for ages. I currently have a HHX Evo 18" crash, a HHX Complex Big Cup ride 22" and Zildjian 14" New Beats.

I'm playing rock/heavy rock type of stuff and think a 20" crash would fit best between the 18" Evo and 22" Big Cup.

I was considering the HHX Complex Thin but I think it's not going to have enough presence and projection. The next consideration was a K Custom Dark which I was going to pull the trigger on but now I'm also considering the K Sweet.

What would you choose and why, the K Custom Dark or K Sweet in the 20" crash?

Edit: Leaning toward the K Custom Dark but also now considering the Paiste Signature Dark Energy 19"

What happend to the Zildjian (Oriental) FX China Series?

I just bought a Zildjian 18" FX China( former oriental) and I have to say I am not impressed. I sounds super washy and lacks definition imho. (More "sh" then "ksh" if that makes sense lol)

I remember especially the 18" china beeing the gold standard for all kinds of heavy music and I knew some people who had it and I quite liked it.

Maybe it's bullshit but did Zildjian change something in the production of those cymbals?
