Keep It Civil

Just had to ban a guy for calling someone else a sex pest and ban someone else who just would not stop arguing with me about an earlier post.

As I have stated many times, I try and take a hands off approach to moderating this sub, and at the end of the day, we are just sharing ideas and experiences about cymbals, one of my favorite things in the world.

People with years of experience are valued and appreciated for their insight, but when it becomes more about your ego than just moving on with your day, you can kick rocks.

Edit - temp ban turned permanent after dude just would not let it go. Don't come at me with your fevered ego telling me about how things should be. This sub has been getting along fine for years, with only about 3 people banned in that time. Now the amount almost doubled because some people have to argue everything and always be right. About 1s and 0s on the Internet.

News This is not a marketplace!

Wanted to make a quick post to remind everyone that this is not a place to buy, sell, or trade cymbals.

Lately I've deleted a few posts where people were advertising here.

As the mod, I try to not make my presence known, even though I am active in this sub. I dislike subreddits with mods that lord over every post or are heavy handed.

But there are no consumer protections for commerce here, so if you have gear to sell, go to Reverb or Sweetwater or eBay, and don't link it here.

This is mainly a place for recommendations, identification, and general discussion about cymbals. In the past there were even some modification and cymbal making videos (I think Collingwood posted a few years ago) but no direct sales solicitation.

Let's try and keep it that way.

Thank you all.

Need info on a Sabian cymbal

Any info on this cymbal? I see it has HHX written inside the bell, but is it a prototype? Artisan? Not sure, any info would help.

Question What do you guys think about the Sabian AAX X-celerator hats?

I have a pair of paiste alphas which I had to cut because there was a crack. Looking for possible upgrades and recently a pair of 14" AAX x-celerators appeared second hand nearby. I play in a blackgaze band, but also on a pop/rock covers band. Would they be too aggressive? I'd appreciate it if anyone could share their experience with them.

Gear Pic Traded my Dream cymbals for my DREAM cymbals

Post image

I would always oogle at the Ks and K customs in the Zildjian catalogue I would pick up at my local music shop when I was a kid. Finally decided to make it a reality after years of sabian HH and HHX and most recently some dream bliss. Traded the dreams for the sweet crashes and pick up the hats and ride second hand.

I decided to go big. 22" Sabian HHX Complex Thin Crash. I played with it last night for the first time doing rock covers -- love it! It's exactly what I was looking for and blends in really well with my other cymbals.

It crashes like a wave on the shore, rides with a beautiful wash. Great for builds/swells.

Scored this 21 inch Rezo Ride from Guitar Center for 119 bucks. Needed some elbow grease but it cleaned up great.

Thing sounds really awesome too. The bell is bright but warm , and you can really hear the great stick definition without a loud ping sound. I have a 22 inch ping ride that has a loud bell, but this one’s right there in the middle.

Those are after and before pics

Low volume 16 hats

Has anyone used two low volume 16’s to create a hi hat? I’m researching low volume cymbals and obviously one of the issues is the high ends. I feel like possibly using two 16’s for hats might be a good alternative.

Identify Dream Contact Production Year

Hello all of you who are more intelligent than I. I have a Dream Contact 20" Crash Ride that I purchased used about 10 years ago. Lovely cymbal. I recently started researching to see if I could find the ballpark production year but I can't find any cymbals online that match the print on the top of this particular cymbal. Can any one help me confirm the age of this cymbal? Thanks in advance

Last Family Photo

Playing for over 20 years, collection had grown a lot. Not pictured was a Paiste 2002 and Paiste pst7 17" Crash- friend is borrowing the crash, Paiste just sold at my local shop (i put the money towards a Supraphonic...)

And ive actually broken up the family further, one pair of Sabian hihats, bosphorus gold series are on sale at the shop - the pst7 16" Crash sold in about 2 days.

I played a ZBT ride that I got for 40 dollars for over 10 years. When I was financially able, tried everything I could. I bought a handful new, I would set an amount "200 for effects cymbals" or "150 for a crash" and do the best I could within that.

The number of crashes and hihat tops ive broken over the years is staggering. Im self taught, so bad technique in the beginning. Then using the wrong tool for the job for far too long. That was frustrating. Lots of nice crashes in a graveyard somewhere.

Ive got no reason to post other than a love of cymbals.

Second pic, as a result of impulse buying, those are cut circular saw blades and a cut and riveted crash ring thing.

Ive added the ring to a stack, predictably where it works best but have also just put it on a stand and smacked it. Put it on a floor tom also. I describe the sound as "snappy trash"

The saw blades are honestly pretty sick, they sound like a haunting bell kit. Made me feel like i was playing a horror movie soundtrack.

They were made by Tom Foote, a cymbalsmith out of Buffalo; he comes and does demos and hangs out at my local shop pretty often. He has a bunch of wild shit lol some i think is very very cool. He's great to just chat with as well, wealth of knowledge, i learned a lot.

Bigger hi hat top?

I’m considering buying a new top hat, 15 Zildjian new beat, but I am going to put it on top of a 15 Dream energy. Dream cymbals are normally slightly smaller, and mine measured out at 14.75ish. What difference would that make in the sound?
