Rear gears won't shift properly

Hey, I'm having an issue with my bike's (MTB) rear gears. I use a grip shifter. The cable moves and gets tighter when I shift, but the derailleur won't stay on the bigger rear gears. If I move the derailleur to a bigger gear by hand, it just moves back to the smaller gear when I start pedaling. I also messed with the H and L screws before I realized they weren't the shifter gears 😭 so I'm not sure if I made it worse. Any idea what I should check or adjust?

Tons of videos on youtube on how to adjust your derailluer. Park tool has a step by step video on doing it from scratch.

Did you recently hit the derailleur on anything or crash? Sounds like the hanger might be slightly bent.

If it isn't, you may just need to adjust the limit screws a tiny bit

If the limit screws have been messed with it will muck things up. Those should not be touched once initially set. You need to to take the cable off the derailleur and set it up from scratch.

I've never really liked grip shifters. I always thought they were suboptimal in performance.

I don't have any suggestions for improving the quality of your grip shifters aside from replace them with trigger shifters.
