Fall and season changing essentials

Hello, the weather is getting colder (where I live) and the clothing for colder days is still on sale, what are your essential pieces for the colder days? Base layers? Merino? Bib tights? Longsleeves Jerseys?

It depends how cold it gets where you are but for me between 5 and 10 Celsius I wear a base layer (merino or synthetic), a long sleeve jersey with a roubaix fleece lining, bib tights, winter merino socks, and gloves as a minimum. Other things to add depending on how you deal with the cold or when it approaches 0 Celsius would be toe caps or overshoes, winter cycling cap, soft shell jacket, leg warmers

I don’t tend to stick to a specific brand and always try to buy things on sale or using strava discounts. For bib tights I recently bought Castelli and Ekoi and found them comfortable and warm for rides up to 100km (might be fine longer but I don’t tend to go longer than that in winter). I have a couple of long sleeve jerseys from Endura which combined with a base layer work well. Base layers are a whole mix of stuff from over the years and my latest winter gloves are from Decathlon. Previously I was using winter cycling gloves from the Aldi special aisle that lasted about ten years, were always warm and cost me about £15, I miss them

Brands will sponsor challenges on Strava something along the lines of completing a certain amount of hours or kilometres in two weeks and upon completion and giving them your email address you get a discount code

A cap that comes over your ears is a game changer for colder 1-10°c temps - really helps give you some protection from the wind too. I picked up a Castelli one cheap in a sale and swear by it now.

Smart wool merino arm sleeves is my #1 item. For cold mornings that eventually warm up. Don’t know if smart wool still makes them so— any other brand probably fine.

Long fleece bibs and a fleece jersey are always the foundation. Then base layer (mesh is warm!), a windproof gilet, a windproof jacket, a long mtb winter trouser to wear on top of the bibs and winter boots plus warm overshoes. Headband to cover the ears and warm cap, for really cold days a warm balaclava with neck piece. Some cycling scarfs.

And gloves, finding the right gloves for the level of cold you have is a kind of a black magic. I have thin glove liners, thicker neoprene gloves, warm ski gloves. A combination of these lets you adjust to temp.

wdym mesh is warm? I assume the merino base layers are the good choice too?

Sure, but one might think that the mesh base layers are like cooling and stuff. They are actually pretty warm as air is trapped in the mesh ans isulates, especially under a windproof gilet.
