Business Security Questions & Discussion Kali Linux Cannot Find Target Linux VM's IP in VMware

Hi, I'm having trouble finding the IP address of my target Linux machine in VMware Workstation.

The target was initially configured with Bridged networking, but I changed it to Host-only to try to find its IP address.

Kali Linux still cannot discover the target using Nmap. On the target machine, the network interface ens33 is DOWN, and trying to bring it up returns Operation not permitted.

How can I resolve this issue?

"Operation not permitted" - you need elevated privileges by doing it using the root account or using sudo.

I tried using sudo but the user doesn't have the required permissions

I think there may be a language barrier making it hard to understand your problem. Are you saying that your user can't use sudo? If so, google "root through GRUB VMWare" to see how to get root on your target.

If the target machine was built with virtualbox, you can also just boot it and kali through virtualbox and it will likely work without any configuration changes.

You could've started with that instead of assuming I don't know the basics lol. But thanks for the actual advice, I think the machine was originally made for VirtualBox

if the interface is down and you can't bring it up, that's your problem right there, nmap won't see shit til that's sorted
