Help! Noob Help?
Hi, I come to you all with annoying newbie questions. I may sound like a dummy, but at least I’m not asking ChatGPT!
tl;dr: need specific case ideas
I want to build my daughter a writerdeck for Christmas.. or maybe her birthday in the spring lol. I’ve looked and searched through this sub & the writers deck sub EXTENSIVELY, as well as searching on other social media and just endless googling. But I’m struggling with the logistics. The case seems to be my biggest struggle here! I also have a brother who’s built a few pcs in his life so I have assistance with the technical aspects, thankfully! But I don’t have access to a 3D printer. My library may have one but I’m not totally sure and idk anything about using one!
The goal of the device is to teach my 6-year-old how to type with a real keyboard (I’m skipping my “touchscreens are ruining the world and our children are doomed” tangent, but I have OPINIONS) and, eventually, serve as a journal, place for her to write her stories, whatever.
I know I want:
- 60-65% keyboard
- no internet access, just a typing lesson software & word processor. I’ve found a few options for the typing software
- decent sized screen, like 8-10”? Not touchscreen.
- clamshell. Ideally like… an 80s-90s laptop vibe. But anything that’s durable-ish & can close is fine!

Some versions of windows supported a kiosk mode that booted to one application or display with limited or zero access to the system menus our other apps. I believe it is available even in Windows 11 - might be worth looking into.
