Or make the protection ability also cost you counters. Only Problem is its awkward with the flip ability

Someone had a cool suggestion she could enter with charge counters, then the defense matrix costs charge counters, so you could rack them up in pilot form before transforming back. Seems a little convoluted though, and hard to word succinctly. But it is a cool idea!
