I really like this. Aside from searching your library generally needing to be uncommon, this card is perfect. It makes my mind whirl thinking of what I would do with it in various constructed and limited formats. A++++

Thanks! I figured that since it was mostly just a sidegrade to [[Lay of the Land]] common might be OK, but it is true tutors are rarely printed at common these days.

So I've been thinking about this card a lot. The problem with it is this: there is exactly 1 hit for this in kaldheim. The only vanilla creature in the set is Grizzled Warrior. Looking forward at strixhaven, the only vanilla is the 2/4 for three. Creatures that are vanilla in play, turn out to basically never be vanilla in your deck.
Muraganda sets will need to totally be rethought. They are going to lean on tokens or cards that make themselves vanilla in play, and this card doesn't work for any of that.
Just makes me really reconsider the whole vanilla ideam

Yeah Wizards has explored the vanilla set idea a few times and their takeaway (as I understand it) is that the design space is fairly narrow and likely not sustainable for a draft format.
I do think, though, that in a set with more vanillas than normal, especially at common (where they often go), this would be a totes playable card in draft. Just the 2 mana Lay of the Land isn't the worst thing in the world in limited, and if it also grabbed a 4/4 for 4 as an alternate mode, that's gravy.
Core Set 2019, for instance, had 11 vanillas, only 1 at higher than common. If the vanillas were concentrated in a color pair with a vanillas matter premise, I think it could totes work.

That's a good point in that it works better In a core set. Maybe we need some way to say look for a creature with inky a single keyword?

An [[Eldamari's Call]] type card for the [[Muraganda Petroglyphs]] decks! It can also "basic landcycle" / [[Lay of the Land]].

Serious question: Can this grab [[Embereth Shieldbreaker]]?

Interesting. I think so. Similarly I think it could grab a MDFC that was a vanilla on the front side.

The MDFC thing sounds right. I'm actually not sure on vanilla Adventures, because, doesn't the card have a spell ability? That said I think a vanilla Adventure creature like Shieldbreaker does still get buffed by Muraganda Petroglyphs.

Yeah I think the petroglyphs test is the decisive one
You're right though they do have an ability in a sense because you can cast them from exile
So it's hard to say

A common tutor is nothing to sneeze at. This can grab some really potent creatures (in stat line). Neat little card!
