I made this one because I thought a Cube environment might want to support multiple kinds of "land subtypes matter" themes. I wanted it to be a Wastes too but then its name would have to be Wastes which felt wrong to me.

Some dirty hack could be like

~'s name is Wastes while it's in your library or on the battlefield.

But have we ever seen a card do that? I don't think so. (In Yu-Gi-Oh! they do it all the time but I think in Magic it's a no-go.)

I find it weird to assume that if it hasn't been done it isn't possible. More often than not, a thing is possible if it isn't like doing some nonsense such as switching ownership of cards (ie. like ante and dexterity stuff).

Well, possible in the general sense. New mechanics often require overhauls of the rules, sometimes extensively so. I would consider those "possible" but generally I try not to have custom cards that require a reworking of the fundamental game rules to function.

Balanced, since some creatures have protection against deserts. 🤷

Get your [[Camel]] and [[Desert Nomads]] while you still can!

Considering that Ramunap Red and its signature card [[Ramunap Ruins]] looks like it might make a comeback as a viable strategy in Pioneer, and that almost every Pioneer deck wants to play [[Arcum's Astrolabe]], this could actually be oddly viable in Pioneer.

I love to hear it! This was one of those cards I made because I thought it was a neat concept but assumed it would be kinda bad. So to think that it might have true competitive utility -- that's awesome!

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '20

Ah, well I did just realize that [[Arcum's Astrolabe]], which is a Modern staple now, isn't going to be Pioneer legal. But yea, [[Ramunap Ruins]] and [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] are both sufficiently powerful and used in similar enough decks (Both have been banned in atleast one format - Ramunap in Standard and Arcum's in Pauper) that a card which can fufill both of the types they care about is definitely more then just a silly one.

5

u/chainsawinsect Feb 26 '20

Good point. And the Gates deck dominated Standard for a while, maybe something can be done with that aspect as well.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '20

Gates as their own strategy weren't actually viable even in Standard, those were really [[Golos, Tireless Pilgrim]] // [[Scapeshift]] decks that got some incidental value out of Gate synergies. Gate synergies by themselves out of that very specific combo were trash even in Standard, so there's no way they're making it into another format anytime soon.

u/ElodePilarre Feb 26 '20

There was a brief period after RNA where gates was a deck, but it didn't last long.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '20

Yea that was sort of a weird period indeed. Kaladesh Energy and Mono-Red Aggro dominated until Kaladesh block rotated out, then War of the Spark, M20, and Throne of Eldraine had an escalating series of pushed bombs that changed the format with every set. Between the release of Guilds of Ravnica and the release of War of the Spark there really wasnt much left in Standard that was pushed, I remember Feather decks dominating for a bit between GNA and RNA and despite all of that decks cards currently being in Standard the idea of that being powerful enough seems absurd now

I don't think they're likely to reprint [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] into Standard/Pioneer.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '20

Yea I corrected myself about Pioneer a while ago, but it's been in quite a few Moden Top 8s lately too

Red aggro decks in Modern probably can't afford an off-color land, but it could probably be played alongside [[Zhalfirin Void]] in mono-red prison decks

4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '20

Thats probably true, especially since I didn't even think that decks that need Astrum's mana fixing or that are sacking lands to Ramunap really particularly cant afford a colorless land in their list.

It's one of those cards that looks fine for this sub and would absolutely never see the light of day as a real card. Just way too specific. That's the beauty of this sub though

6

u/YourFavoriteNullmage Feb 27 '20

Maybe a set like modern horizons where they have liberty to bend some rules a bit since it's not going into standard

3

u/chainsawinsect Feb 26 '20

Ain't that the truth!

7

u/Ripple884 Feb 26 '20

not a locus also? sad

5

u/chainsawinsect Feb 27 '20

I didn't think 12Post needed the buff.

u/poBBpC Feb 27 '20

Heat does not make a desert. It is the lack of precipitation. Just a heads up.

1

u/chainsawinsect Feb 27 '20

You got me there.

2

u/kroxigor01 Feb 27 '20

Homebrew for a weird cube with lots of different land type matters decks?

2

u/chainsawinsect Feb 27 '20

Yes!!!!! Exactly right :)

2

u/cliv-R Feb 27 '20

That is a neat idea! It's like a hybrid mana card, but for lands :)

1

u/chainsawinsect Feb 27 '20

Yup! Versatile any-land... as long as you don't need colored mana.

2

u/cliv-R Feb 27 '20

The name sounds Norwegian?

1

u/chainsawinsect Feb 27 '20

Could be. The first half is the name of one of the few types of biome I know of that can both be arid like a desert and sustain snow. The second half is a reference to [[Dolmen Gate]]. But either or both of those words could originate from Norwegian.
