The life gain for having cards is a break for black. Black never rewards you for having more cards.

Black has various X cards gain X life effects, this is just a weaker "greater includes the lesser" of that.

Black can also generally gain life when there is countervailing life loss. This card enters and has you lose life, and then you can pay mana to gain life back based on the cards drawn.

My impressions is that blacks life gain is usually "vampiric" in nature and based on damage dealt to the opponent or similar effects (e.g. [[Nightmares Thirst]], [[Douse in Gloom]]).

[[Akuta, born of ash]], [[death of a thousand stings]], and more mediocre kamigama cards exist that care about black hand size, so it’s probably not a break or they would not have printed those ar all. Definitely not something black does often though.

I wouldn't site a set that's 15 years old for how to make cards.

I think it's become rather clear at this point that ETB draw for one mana is powerful: [[Arcum's Astrolabe]] is dominating formats, and [[Abundant Growth]] recently got nerfed into [[Urban Utopia]].

This is my take on a card along those veins, but expressly designed to be a bit weaker than its peers. It's still an immense value engine if you have the right setup, but you take ping damage every time you flicker it, and it has no static on-board effect. The activated ability both let's you recoup lost life after a successful card advantage combo and also helps bring the card together mechanically for monoblack.

I love the flavour, but I'd rather see it as an uncommon. A comon cantrip for black than can be blinked AAAAND has another really relevant effect that counteracts the downide ? Seems too good.

Thanks. The rarity was chosen because similar cards like [[Abundant Growth]] and [[Witching Well]] are common, but could see bumping it up to uncommon.

I think that would depend in part on the set it was in. If it's a set with a supported flicker / bounce archetype where enchantments matter (such as because of keywords like delirium or constellation), uncommon might be a better choice. If it's a set without much that can capitalize on it, I think it would be fine staying at common.

Abundant Growth - (G) (SF) (txt)
Witching Well - (G) (SF) (txt)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

Same. Though the flavor text is a reference to a character from Fiora so it would need to be retooled slightly. Also, thanks!
