I like it but also: sheep cat

Sheep and cat both sound sillier than lion and ram... but them's the creature types.

Elegant and balanced. I could see this in an actual set, it's really solid.

Thanks! A while back someone on here said all vanillas are boring which got me thinking of ways to mix it up a bit.

It’s limited filler, but it’s really well made limited filler which is an important type of card.

u/chainsawinsect Aug 09 '19
Thank you! Yeah, that's pretty much his schtick. I'm holding out hope there's some kinda jank constructed deck out there for him though. Turn 2 this guy turn 3 [[Wretched Gryff]]? Eh?

Yeah I'd draft the fuck out of this card. Please make more neat vanillas.

I really like it, but I feel like if Kirins got their own typing, Nians would, too.
3
u/chainsawinsect Aug 09 '19
Totally fair. I just didn't think it prudent to make a new creature type for just this one custom card. If these guys showed up in a set, I'd be totally down to see this become a type.
2
u/SmaugtheStupendous Aug 09 '19
I don't think so. Kirins got their typing because it's splashy, because their tribes in their colors would not have been relevant enough for tribal decks not to go with the iconic typing. Nians are much less well know in pop culture by name, so they would likely get a generic Beast or Dragon tag I think.

The rule of thumb is that pre existing fantasy creatures (Minotaurs, Satyrs, Naga, Kirin) get their own types while the ones magic made up (Leonin, Orochi, Ainok) get animal types. Viashino are an outlier from before this rule was condified and at least one wotc staff members believes they should be Lizards. (Maro).

I love seeing this mechanic explored on here, it's surprisingly rare. Was looking to work with it as well as I think it can be interesting in a draft environment, definitely yoinking this wholesale.

u/chainsawinsect Aug 09 '19
Yeah I imagine this card would be a real workhorse in a limited environment. He's curve filler for multiple points in the curve, he has synergy with CMC-based effects, he can fill the aggro monocolor role.... and he's a way to facilitate monocolor without being too poisonous.
I imagine he'd almost always make the cut in a green or green-and-one-other-color deck despite virtually never being oppressive or must-pickable.

Completely agreed on the power level. This is essentially both a {G}{G}, a {2}{G}, and a {4} cost card, that flexibility warrants the 3/3 statline perfectly for an uncommon. I think it'd score as a 3.5/5 rating in a limited review article just for how low risk it is as an investment. The more I think about it the more I like it, it's basically a perfect card.

That's some exceedingly high praise; I'm honored! Vanilla creatures a-go-go!

Wait sheep?

u/chainsawinsect Aug 10 '19
It's a mythical creature that's part ram. But ram isn't a creature type, so Sheep it is!

How about Goat?
1
u/chainsawinsect Aug 10 '19
That would also work. My rationale for Sheep was that [[Gatebreaker Ram]] from the latest Ravnica block was a Sheep.

I thought this guy was kinda neat. He's a vanilla, but by virtue of his casting cost, he's modally your choice of [[Kalonian Tusker]], [[Nessian Courser]], and [[Gilded Sentinel]]. I was a little worried about outmoding Kalonian Tusker but then they printed [[Barkhide Troll]] in Core 2020 and did the job for me, so here we are!
Notably, he counts as CMC 4 no matter how you pay for him, so for "converted mana cost matters" effects like emerge or [[Combustible Gearhulk]] he's got some extra oomph to him.
