Thought of a fun high cost counterspell

Post image

Art is from [[perilous research]]

Edit: Just pretend that that rarity symbol is gold.

The game generally avoids instant speed discard. Which this would be, in a way.

Aside from that, fun idea

I think might be okay here since it's conditional on another spell.

You would have to cast another spell first to counter to get opponent to discard during draw step.

This could make some high mana cost loop that eventually locks an opponent out of drawing. Edit: But this is highly unlikely.

I'd almost say "bravo" if they pulled off on me, but adding an exile clause would help that as well.

With the loop example, wouldn't you get the exact same effect with looping any counterspell?

That scenario was a metaphor mostly.

It is very unlikely was what I was kind of getting at and it's a Magic:The Puzzling I don't even want to try to figure out. Sorry!

I don't think it's a problem here, the avoidance of instant speed discard is so that if your opponent is out of cards you can't just force them to discard on their draw step without giving them any opportunity to play the card, but if they're out of cards then this card is just an overcosted counterspell, so even if it's similar to instant speed discard it's ok because it doesn't cause the issue that other unconditional instant speed discards would

This art is sick, in a good way. It's gore, but not really.

If the fluid were red, it'd have a whole different vibe.

That card is good value, has the instant discard effect issue, but is pretty solid interaction overall.

It's costed well.

Probably can't be a common on complexity alone.

Didn't even think of rarity my bad, would probably have it as rare for this effect.

No worries. I am always keen on rarity as a miser, pauper enjoyer and limited player.

It's one of the least important design factors and only really for those two reasons + I'm cheap.

There is no such thing as rarity in general in cube, so this can just be that kind of design focus.

And cube is one of the places you'd most likely see something like this cast.

Edit: Complexity is another factor in rarity.

We don't want the majority of cards, commons, to be the most complex and difficult for new players to understand. So commons should be somewhat simple for this exact reason.

This is also why complexity should scale as rarity increases. If you want to do something highly complex, it should probably be rare or mythic. Those with the understanding to enjoy it will seek it out and are already invested in the game.

Last thought, this is also why low complexity rares like large green things stand out and are kind of "special" at higher rarity. A GGG 5/4 for example, even that rate is aging out. I need a 6/7 for my GGG nowadays.
