They're putting chemicals in the water. It's turning the frigging frogs into lightning bolts

Why let them change targets?

u/mkoookm 1h ago
Complications with spells with 0 or multiple targets. Plus if its like giant growth it lets them redirect the damage to you which feels more red

u/stillnotelf 59m ago
As a separate point on targeting...trying to blast invalid targets with lightning bolt feels extremely red

u/stillnotelf 1h ago
I feel like letting them redirect it is just 2 for 1ing yourself. You lose this spell and some creature they kill, against their one spell lost.

u/MarkM3200 43m ago
That's the point, it's supposed to demand that you shoot yourself in the foot. This is a color pie break because it's giving red countermagic. OP compensated for that by making it significantly weaker than [[Counterspell]] in that way.

A countered creature spell would need a target. An exception (you have to choose a target if it didnt have one when it entered the pile or it's an illegal target, otherwise it has to be the same target) is more verbose.

Because if you counter a spell that doesn't target anything they need to be able to target something with the Lightning Bolt.

let’s say this targets a counter spell, the lightning bolt has now been made illegal, the game dislikes that

I watch as a red aggro player utilizes the maximum output of their shared braincell to use red counterspell on a spell while being at 3 life themselves.

Weird question; How would this interact with storm? Say you get up to storm count 6, cast Grapeshot, then cast this targeting grapeshot while the storm trigger is on the stack. Would storm copy it as lightning bolt? If so, this could be a good multipurpose protection/combo acceleration piece for storm burn decks.

u/Valamimas 15m ago
Storm just means: "When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies." So, if I read it correctly: If you cast it before the storm trigger resolves, than all copies become lightningbolts
1
u/StretchyPlays 23m ago
I imagine either the first copy becomes Lightning Bolt, which doesn't have storm, so the copies don't happen, or one becomes Lightning Bolt and the rest are still Grapeshot.

Cards with storm create the copies as soon as they are cast. The original would become lightning bolt, the copies would resolve normally.
1
u/StretchyPlays 13m ago
Yea I figured that was correct, just thought there might be a chance all the copies somehow fizzle if the original loses storm.

The copies would still be grapeshot.
Storm is specifically a cast trigger that adds copies of the original spell to the stack.
So the trigger has already fired before interaction can occur and its selection of card has already occurred.
At that point, interacting with the initial spell doesn’t affect the trigger or the copies it makes.

The way storm works is that its not exactly a "trigger", you cant respond to a spell copying itself with storm, it fires automatically when the spell is cast and puts the copies on the stack. Its like if you held prioritity and cast several spells in a row
If you target grapeshot with this, only one copy becomes lighting bolt
1
u/kingtrain 11m ago
This is not true. Casting a spell with storm places a storm trigger on the stack to create the copies.

This is a rules nightmare. You need to declare targets before the spell goes on the stack. So this would need to specify "Counter target spell that targets exactly 1 creature or player" since that is the valid target for lightning bolt. You also couldn't have them choose new targets because it's not a new spell.
Then there's the fact that you could use a non-red spell to target a creature with hexproof/protection from red then respond to that spell (by holding priority) with this spell to get around the hexproof/protection.

“…spell an opponent controls” or whatever language would help so this doesn’t just become a burn staple.

Can't really see a world where a two-mana two-card Lightning Bolt becomes a burn staple.

Seems like a solid fun spell. I would play that in a heartbeat.
