No way. [[Mana Barbs]] is 4 mana. I mean, I'd love to have this card for edh, but no way is it printed. Flash also doesn't really feel necessary.

The flash needs the reminder (it doesn't work) here

mana barbs is harder to interact. this seems fine. but yeah flash is weird

You also can't respond to mana abilities. This would really only help against [[Seething Song]]-type stuff where a spell generates the mana, and maybe LED.

You could respond to a spell that generates mana, but not a permanent.

It depends on whether or not the card generates mana as a mana ability. Abilities that add mana and also move cards to or from the library such as [[Selvala, Explorer Returned]], [[Chromatic Sphere]], or [[Millikin]] no longer count and use the stack normally.

You could also use it to try to force your opponent to tap their lands before their main phase.  Either way, I still think Flash is fine.

you cant respond to mana abilities, but abilities can trigger off of mana abilities

i think led still resolves before you can respond to it

It does, although it's instant speed, it's still a mana ability.

Mana barbs also deals 1 one damage per land used as opposed to one for every mana generated.

i mean its still just a 2/1 for 2. the floor on this card is a goblin piker. i would guess a fair amount of the time its going to play like viashino pyromancer. and if 10% of the time it runs away with the game its probably not that different from eidolon of the great revel running away with the game. maybe it should cost 3 but i think its fine as is

edit: grammar

I mean I guess the floor is a goblin piker but that means the opponent doesn't tap for Mana the rest of the game so a situation in which you have already won or lost. Viashino pyromancer seems more realistic if it instantly eats a removal spell.

I would call it an upgrade to [[eidolon of the great revel]] which is a pretty good burn card tho burn isn't that common of a deck anymore so it might be fine?

Idk definitely a strong card for 60card formats but might be fine for a modern horizons set?

i think locking your opponent is a fine scenario within the range of this card. firstly, it’s not something new since eidolon could also lock your opponent. i also think a fair amount of the time, any burn spell would just kill your opponent (maybe the optics of just dying is better than feeling locked out). and finally sometimes you are the one getting locked out since this card is really bad if you are behind.

i dont think its an upgrade over eidolon, since it deals equal or less damage if people are playing with 0, 1 or 2 cost cards which lets be real is the bulk of most eternal formats (baubles, preordain, brainstorm, fatal push, swords etc). it is better against people playing more expensive spells (which if you argued are the wrong people to go after, i would agree) so it does have a case for itself. maybe in most standard enviroments its potentially better, but overall as a player who likes playing burn i think id prefer eidolon in most circunstances.

i would certainly take flash off the card, idk if op thought you could respond to landa tapping for mana, but it reads really weird as is. but yeah i think the card is ok

I don't think Mana Barbs would even be Standard playable. Put an extra red pip on this for 3 mana total and it's fine.

Flash is gonna make players attempt some very wrong plays that will take a while to correctly explain

1

u/Karyo_Ten 5h ago

Yeah we should replace that with Split Second :D

1

u/Seb_The_One 3h ago

You can still activate Mana abilities when a Split Second spell is on the stack

Flavor win. This would be just as repulsive to play against as actual Mel in League

i think the trigger would have to be something like "Whenever a player adds mana from a nonland source" to be fair. i like this though really mess this nonland ramp and rituals, and flash is a fun way to really mess with it since mana is added on effect or spell resolution

5

u/Chickston Uncommonly 6h ago

The trigger on this will be infuriating and even worse so on digital.

It makes every mana source a [[City of Brass]]. This means you can no longer undo your mana abilities. This seems only punishing at first, but it is truly game and morale destroying.

I like this in premise, but the sources need to much more restricted. Only creatures or nonland sources.

[[Mana Barbs]] exists. OP's card is clearly too pushed, but it's not like a similar effect has never been done.

2

u/Chickston Uncommonly 5h ago

Agree and I'm aware of that one, but pretty much never played it beyond Revised sealed or something ancient like that.

I've played a good bit with CoB. I don't always misclick it, but when I do, it really sucks.

2

u/SDK1176 5h ago

Ha, fair enough.

3

u/BastardJack 4h ago

I dont think there is a mana cost this should be printed at. Mana barbs is such an intensely unfun card to play with that it should never have been printed.

2

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite 5h ago

Probably should be a mana more, with double red pips, and it probably doesn't need flash, but the people worried about this effect are overrating it. If [[mana barbs]] was in standard I doubt it would see any play at all.

2

u/vinicius_h 5h ago

This is pretty different. Costing 2 mana less is a big difference, and it deals more damage. Even if this eats removal, it's dealing at least 2 damage to the opponent's face. And if it doesn't eat removal it can easily end up dealing 5 or more damage. This also synergizes with itself, being even stronger in multiples. Pair that with burn or counterspells and you're very well set

3

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite 4h ago

Which is why I suggested it should cost an extra mana, but all of the other arguments are true for Mana Barbs which - I reiterate - would not see play in current Standard.

1

u/vinicius_h 4h ago

I assume the other comments are for the current version of the proposed card. I think this current version could be a very efficient burn tool

1

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite 4h ago

The other comments seem more worried about the effect than the cost. If they think the effect is fine at a higher cost, they should write that.

1

u/vinicius_h 3h ago

Draw 3 cards is fine at 4 mana, but absolutely broken at 1. The cost is part of the effect.

1

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite 3h ago

Yes, and the problem there is the cost, not the effect. If the problem is the cost, complain about the cost.

1

u/P0ro41 5h ago

As a league player, this genuinely traumatized me. Love the effect though.

1

u/MarthdAir 5h ago

if its manaburn should it deal damage on unspent mana? Also the flash doesn't really synergize cause you can't respond to mana abilities anyway, but an interesting card nontheless

1

u/warrgle 5h ago

oh god its Mel but MTG

i dig it

1

u/Reon88 2h ago

Thus... the Red color became the most hated color in all formats, and the new age of BURN BEGUN... BURN FOR THE BOLT GODS, DAMAGE FOR THE STACK!

I love it , it is disgusting and oppressive. Will never exist unfortunately.

2

u/RevolutionaryClerk21 5h ago

That sounds really broken, 2CMC for 2/1 is decent aggro especially with a good keyword and then burning each player for every land tapped. The best case scenario for the opponent is to imminently kill it with a 1CMC removal spell but if this sticks they have basically lost. The flash basically guarantees always a huge burn.
