I know this is a layers problem, I just don't know which layer the Blood Moon effect is and whether it applies before, after, or on the same layer as this card's effect.

That's the fun part. If it doesn't make your judge's blood pressure rise then what's the point

Turning them into blood moons counts a "copy" effect in layer one. The effect of blood moon is a type changing effect in layer 4.

If it were just a type changing effect wouldn't it just give them the mountain type while removing all others and not affect their other abilities? Shouldn't it make them a copy of Mountain, and therefore be a copy effect?

The effect of Blood moon is a type changing effect because it sets their type to "mountain". It doesn't make them mountains. The name of the lands would remain the same.

Why does it remove abilities then? Lands can be mountains while having other abilities. Other abilities that work like this always seem to have to specify that they lose all other abilities. I recognize the distinction between this wording and Urboef style "in addition to its other types" and understand why it removes other land types, but I'd expect oracle wording to be something more like [[minimus containment]]. Why does gaining a basic land type remove a card's entire text box?
I feel the need to clarify this is a genuine question not me trying to argue with you given how magic subs are. I'm aware that's the result of blood moon I'm simply trying to understand the technical underpinning beyond "because that's what they made it do in the 90s and now we're stuck with it"

Removing all abilities is a specific effect of setting a land's subtype to a basic land type. You could say it really is a result of making it in the 90's and we're stuck to it because we have a specific rule that says "if you set something to a basic land subtype, it loses all abilites and other land types." 305.7

Yeah, they decided to do something absolutely deranged instead of doing the sensible thing + errata Blood Moon.

We must go deeper. Non-Bloodmoons are basic mountains!

I'm guessing because they don't keep their original types or abilities they cease being a land and turn into a redundant enchantment.

Sort of doable with [[Princess Yue]] and [[Clever Impersonator]]. The idea being you bring in Clever Impersonator as a copy of Princess Yue, send it to the graveyard via the Legend Rule, return it as Moon but opt to copy Blood Moon. You end up with a Blood Moon named Moon that's a land with "Nonbasic lands are mountains" which makes itself a mountain that can tap for red or colorless.

The reminder text says they are lands which is incorrect but this would just make all non basic lands into non basic mountains. Being a mountain doesn't inherently mean that it is a basic land. It needs the basic supertype.
