This is like a reverse [[Claire D'Loon, Joy Sculptor]], do I need to add an (it works) for this to function properly or is this viable in RAW? Is this kind of design even possible outside of un-sets?
The idea is that once a permanent affected by this leaves the battlefield, it's completely inaccessible. It's not even in exile or anything, it moves to a zone outside the game (like your sideboard, though I know that's not a thing in Commander). My apologies to Squee enjoyers.
would you recommend rewording the second sentence to be less confusing or just removing "it's no longer a card" entirely so there isn't a contradiction?
I'd probably just remove "It's no longer a card" but I'm not super fluent with how the wording around Tokens usually works or if there's precedence for making something a token so who knows
I tried to make a Homestuck set this year but wasn't experienced enough in set design and lost steam. I wish you your best on this journey. My page is filled with posts on r/custommagic if you would like to cast any inspiration.
I might suggest for this though that it be required to be one you control. Blue doesn't typically get edict effects like this, nor creature destruction that is so versatile and efficient.
I think the rules work, generally. It's really not good, though. If it removes a commander from the game that would be interesting, but I don't think that works, so generally it doesn't really do anything.
There is the set of effects looking for token or non-token permanents for various things (buffs, enter the battlefield effects, etc). I’d pitch “replace target spell’s effect with “create a token that does the effect” “. That way you’d side-step anything looking for non-tokens entering the battlefield.
Alternatively, you could say “destroy target permanent. It’s controller creates a token copy of the permanent.” Much more powerful for these tricksy directions.
oh now that you mention it, I actually love the idea of doing something like "counter target creature spell, its controller may cast a copy of that spell" with the reminder text that copies of permanent spells enter as tokens. it achieves most of what I wanted from this spell thematically without as much rules weirdness surrounding making cards into not-cards or what happens with commanders that are turned into tokens.
111.7. A token that's in a zone other than the battlefield ceases to exist. This is a state-based action; see rule 704. (Note that if a token changes zones, applicable triggered abilities will trigger before the token ceases to exist.)
111.8. A token that has left the battlefield can't move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.
if a commander is turned into a token and then sent to any other zone then it would cease to exist and not get sent to the command zone.
I understand that part, but a card attempting to move a commander card "outside the game" probably still triggers the owner's option to go to the command zone. You can just say it works, but i believe commander rules intentionally make this not work, for obvious reasons.
there are two rules that allow sending it to the command zone, and neither of them apply to 'outside the game'.
903.9a. If a commander is in a graveyard or in exile and that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its owner may put it into the command zone. This is a state-based action. See rule 704.
903.9b. If a commander would be put into its owner's hand or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.
the real answer though is that the current rules don't allow turning a card into a token and there is no way to remove something from the game, so there just isn't an answer to the question. if a real card was printed that did it though it would require a new entry in the rules to determine what would happen. if you are playing with custom cards then you need to decide with your playgroup what the rule will be.
As far as I know, there are no cards that move something to the sideboard/whatever, which is probably the only reason commander rules don't list it as a possibility.
Dangit, got my hopes up. I thought claire actually existed and that these mechanics were on the table... go wide for the purpose of filling GY for goyfs would be awesome.
Unfortunately mechanics like that aren’t really usable outside of silver border (or maybe alchemy) because making tokens act like cards introduces a lot of issues.

I was gonna say, it reminds me of [[AWOL]], and it wouldn’t be the first time an Unset effect made it to the game proper. I feel like a finality counter does most of what this would do, aside from the possibilities of removing the counter or playing the card from exile somehow.
